"@ATimson: well, for me I look at it like this. Almost all plans are 2 years long, so calculating the cost over 2 years just inflates the number to something I can't relate to my actual budget, which is monthly (as is the budget of most people). So first I think, "if I get the plan I want, how much does it cost me per month?". If that's affordable, then I think, "OK, how much do I have to give up front to get the phone I want?" Then I compare those 2 numbers to other providers and phones to find something I can afford and that does what I need."
