"Working with Linux is a hefty undertaking" ?? Assuming what? Installing and using Ubuntu is much a quicker & easier process than Windows. After 16 years sitting in front of Windows 7 shouldn't seem as alien to me as it does. *using different flavors of Windows since the beginning, Linux since '97 & OS X since '03ish. Currently own Chromebook, iPad & other iOS devices along with an Android phone. Tested differing flavors of *bsd in the past.
