At the risk of sounding like a militia freak- the only reason he really understood for keeping a gun was that I'm afraid of my government. Weird, the things you bond over."
You'll have to forgive me, b/c I've heard the "I'm keeping/getting a gun to protect myself from our wacked-out gov't" and it makes sense...
Unless you've got a tank, how can you protect yourself if a SWAT team or guardsmen are sent after you?
That's not my only reason, that's just the only reason he understood. Beyond this though, I don't expect to be public enemy number one, but there are situations where one or two overzealous cops got out of hand (see civil rights movement) and people argue that guns would have been helpful. I believe in gun control, but I would argue that people who believe in the elimination of guns are generally safe and suburban. I HAVE had a gun save my life in the ghetto, so I am really bothered by some upper-middle class liberal arts students who doesn't have to live where I've had to live lecture me on how much better life would be without guns- NOT saying that you are one, just saying that guns have served a very really purpose for me, and maybe a Korean wouldn't understand it from any end other than government paranoia. Enjoy the conversatio though!
