<![CDATA[Comments from worsethannormal]]> <![CDATA[Comments from worsethannormal]]> <![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Don't Blow Up The Spaceship Until The Second Paragraph!]]> At first I thought, "What if your story is only 1 paragraph long." But then I realized, you don't see a lot of scifi sudden (750-250 words) or flash fiction (250 and less words). Then I started to wonder, is there something intrinsic in scifi that requires longer fitional forms? Can one do a scifi in 250 words? Do we need all these words to draw the reader into the "alien world" of scifi? Do we need them to paint a world that our readers are not familiar with, when fiction can get away with it because it, generaly, depicts our everyday world? And if these short short forms have become popular in mainstream fiction, why isn't someone at least trying to do something with them in scifi?

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Fracture Review: Breaking New Ground]]> Not that anyone cares, but as I was leaving the demo, the thought struck me, "That was actually fun." I went into this game thinking that it would feel gimicky or be little more than an average shooter. And by the end of the demo I had decided it was both. But the entire package was much more than the sum of it's parts, and made the demo completely enjoyable.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Homeland Security's 'Hostile Thoughts' Detection System Dubbed FAST, Not Pre-Crime]]> What about people with mild agoraphobia or social anxiety. Seems like this would pick up on that as well. In fact any one who feels sufficiently uncomfortable in public would constantly being stopped to be "interviewed". And such confrontations would only increase future anxiety, making it more likely the person would tagged by the system.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Uwe Boll Is Pleased With His Game, Then Again...]]> After seeing the the trailer (not sure where I saw it, but would imagine it was here) other than being a pretty standard FPS, the graphics look pretty good, the jungle did at least. Couldn't really tell about the tunnels. If this is supposed to be about a guy in Viet Cong tunnels, I don't think they captured the claustrophic feel accurately. It seemed like you still had room to dodge from left to right. But You should give Replay a chance. I know it's based on a Boll movie... I just can't defend this thing can I?

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Man Tells Fax Spammers To Go Fax Themselves... And They Comply]]> I have a colleague who did something similar. He was getting a lot of recorded "sales" calls on his home line. They were coming in several times a day from 3 or 4 numbers. So he got the numbers the recording were telling him to call and, using VOIP forwarding, forwaded the numbers to eachother. So Company A's recorded sales calls go to Company B's call call center, Company B's recorded sales calls go to Company C's call center, Company C's recorded sales call go to ....

You get the picture.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Champions Online To Feature Crucial 'Non-Embarrassing Costume' Option]]> Um, you could dress in street clothes in both CoH and CoV. My first character wore boots, jeans, a t-shirt, cowboy hat and aviator glasses. Ok, I'm from Houston, so those are street clothes for me. (not really)

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Spaceballs' Animated Return May Mean That G4 Hates Us]]> Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I didn't find the movie funny at all, so the boobs are a welcome addition. But seriously, does anyone really think Mel Brooks style humor wouln't get just out right tedious week-to-week? I know I find it tedious for the 1.5 hours of each of this movies.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on The Greatest American Hero Returns, But Did He Bring The Hero-Fro?]]> As much as I love this TV show, can a movie today really capture the charm it had? For one, I love the outlandishly bad special effects. I remember one episode revoloved around a Russian submarine off the California coast. The FX budget was so cheap that not only did they use stock footage of a submarine acending and decending, but they used the same clip for both. So if the submarine was surfacing it looked normal, but when it needed to dive the fx dept simply played the same piece of film in reverse.

Unless they do things like this (and not on purpose, they should just hand their FX team a $20 bill, a role of duct tape and some fishing line and see what they can do) I don't think it will be as charming as the show.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on PS3 BioShock Features "Over Ten Minute" Mandatory Install]]> Wow, a whole 10 min install. How am I ever going to live? The world is coming to an end! Doom! Doom! Doom!

Seriously, I recently reloaded the PC version of Fable; 45 Mins! So I'll probably do the same thing I did while loading that game: watch TV, read, listen to music, etc. I mean, you can't go and do something else for 10 mins?

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on iPod Touch Version 2 Review]]> So, again, Apple has failed to sell me an iPod. Where's the storage? 32GB? They have to be joking. I understand some people are happy with that, but I never know what I'll feel like listening to or watch. And I can't believe that this kind of storage gives anyone enough room to store even a decent sub-set of their media.

On the other side, this doesn't make sense for Apple. If they want to sell TV and movies through iTunes, why not give your customers the storage to carry a lot of that kind of media around with them? Seems like you'd sell more media files that way.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on What's Wrong With the Niche Market? The 'Guitar Praise' Problem]]> I'm no fan of christians or Christianity, but it seems to me that this (if produced properly) certainly could fill a niche and if Harmonix wants to get up in arms about it (which they are not) why don't they license music from christian "musicians".

Honestly, the people who should be upset by "christian" games are christians. They should be up set at the quality and what it says about how the developers and publishers feel their audience. Usually the quality is so low, that the only assumstion is that the devs and publishers either a) consider their audience to be unsophisticated when it comes to vidoe games or b) don't give a crap about their audience and are just putting out something that can be labled "christian" because there is an audience so starved for vidoe games that they'll buy anything labled "christian" (essentially, crooks or con-men). If christians want to play Christian games, more power to 'em. I just hope they get better games. And publishers that care about their customers instead of the current crop that looks like a bunch of swindlers trying to cash in with little or no work and investment.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Monster Knows You Need Five Different Sprays to Clean Your iPhone, Camera, Phone, GPS and Laptop]]> I am no fan of Monster, but (at least according to Monster) these sprays contain more than alcohol and water. From the press release:

According to Jim Krueger, AEGIS COO: "Monster ScreenClean products were developed with careful consideration of the growing problem posed by disease-causing agents that are prone to exist on portable electronic devices, where the heat-rich environment and constant human handling can create optimum conditions for contamination. Monster's research in this area has led to the incorporation of the AEGIS Microbe Shield in its ScreenClean products. The AEGIS Microbe Shield technology is used to protect a variety of surfaces in major hospitals and in sports bags. Monster ScreenClean with AEGIS technology permanently bonds to the surface of the cleaning cloth and inhibits the growth of micro organisms, effectively controlling a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi, mold, mildew, yeast and other one-celled organisms."

Of course that's what we all have immune systems for.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Judge Dredd Inspires A Different Kind Of Australian Justice]]> What's interesting is that here's a guy quoting a 17th century writer/philosopher/etc. and the first example, as well as most pertinent and succinct example, is Judge Dredd. Seems like we're still dealing with and thinking about separation of powers more than 200 years after Montesquieu's ideas help lead us toward stable democracy's. Good for us. Now can we have a more substantive conversation about this than Judge Dredd?

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Force Unleashed: The Book Tops NY Times Best-Sellers List]]> Uh, just to point out, the NYT best-seller list is a joke and a half. <![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Fox On Watchmen Lawsuit: Don't Blame Us!]]> I have to say, I don't understand all the vitriol towards Fox. I'm not really sure what they have/are doing wrong. If they own the rights (or even certain rights) to the property then they deserve compensation under the law (I'm not saying that copyright law in the U.S. doesn't need to be addressed, it certainly does). And, if Fox, in fact, contacted Warner about this pre-production, then Warner is to blame for this fiasco for ignoring Fox.

I'm no fan of anything News Corp. but they seem to be in the right here, and I kinda hope they stop it (they won't, Warner would rather settle than have the movie never make any money) because. I just don't think Watchmen can be done as a movie without stripping out its emotional and thematic underpinnings (like the Black Freighter section).

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Rush's Moving Pictures Hits Rock Band Next Week]]> @Sundermania: I don't know. Personally, I think Rush shines more on their lesser known songs, eximplified here by Witch Hunt, Camera's Eye and Vital Signs. Its songs like these, Jacob's Ladder from Permanent Waves or Cyngus X1 from Hemispheres (Please, Harmonix, put out Hemispheres for Rock Band) where Rush does it's most intersting work.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Champions Online: Superheroes vs. Westworld?]]> @corpore-metal: I've been following Champions since it was anounced (and have followed Cryptic since 1999 when I discovered COH was under development), and I can tell you, they are not gong for the rule-crunchiness the Champions PnP has (thank gawd). They are looking at an easy to pick up game (zero-to-hero in 5 mins). That being said, they are making everything customizable. Not only down to what your character looks like, but to how they walk, run, stand and sit. Beyond that they have implemented a facial expression system into the game.

They are also allowing for power customization, though they haven't announced how far this will go. Though they have announced no classes or occupations. There are very few limits on the types of powers a character can pick. There are no skill trees, instead they are using the idea of "power frameworks", though again almost no specifics have been released. The one restriction on powers they are implementing is that each character must pick one light melee attack and one light ranged attacks. This is required for some of the gameplay mechanics they've implemented. Specifically, endurance recharge. Instead of having an endurace bar that recharges over time, so you have to wait to throw powers, you charge your endurance by throwing lighter attacks and spend it by throwing big attacks. There's also an active blocking mechanic (hold button to block) that will build endurance. They are looking at other types of powers like light heals to build endurance, but that's still being worked on.

One of the most exciting customization, and something they took from Champions if I'm not mistaken, is the ability to desgin your own nemesis that will try and thwart your goals ant certain times. That sounds interesting. but since the thing isn't even in Beta yet, we'll see.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on Texas House Sucked Into Wormhole]]> Wow, that thing was torn down like 2 years ago. But it truly was an amazing piece while it was up. I know it looks like this is on a neighborhood street in the pictures, but was actually on a major street near downtown Houston (Texas is a big place, you really should be more specific).

It was a very surreal expirience everytime one drove past it. Kind of made the whole section of the street feel like it was falling into the side of the building. And no matter if you were expecting it or not. Unfortunately these pictures don't really capture how the whole piece fit into the space. I really don't think this would have had the same impact if hadn't been framed the way it was by the street and surrounding buildings and trees.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on PS2 Gets 1:1 Swordfighting Game Using EyeToy]]> I don't really get things like or sword fighting mothion control on the Wii. When I imagine how this would work it just seems lame without force feed back. You don't have an opponents sword to actually stop your swing. Playing a game like this just seems like it would be nothing but awkward recoveries from blocked attacks that your sword swung completely through.

<![CDATA[worsethannormal commented on The Criterion Collection's Reference Blu-ray Player: The PlayStation 3]]> @venomous_duck41: The possible reason they don't bundle BD's with more devices, is the same reason the PS3 is the cheapest BD player on the market. BD's require a some signifigant CPU horespower as I understand it. And with the Cell Processor already on the PS3 they didn't have to worry about the expense (not just the CPU price but heat mitigation and the like) of a CPU for the BD. Not to mention, Sony is still sell PS3's at a loss.
