Samsung recently commissioned an independent inspection of 100 of its suppliers in China. Surprise: their working conditions are still dreadful.
Most of the factories fail to comply with China's legally permitted overtime hours; a third don't provide social insurance. In terms of physical threats, half have workers under the age of 18 handling hazardous chemicals; 33 fail to manage sewage and waste disposal properly; and three exceeded limits for dust and noise levels.
It's the latest in a long series of labor horror stories, not just from Samsung. It's heartening in some sense that Samsung has rectified 1,934 work hazard issues in the past year, though, and now has 2,000 "highly trained" inspectors to continue the trend.
