That's a speaker, one of two on each side of the phone. Smart, because the sound isn't obstructed when it is placed on a table top. That's also a honest to god headphone jack, no adapters needed. There's also an IR port and a microSD slot below that.

Actually, on a phone (where the lows are practically not there), people will tell you to put the speaker against a solid surface to muffle the highs and balance the range.
