The SD15 and DP2 share the same 3-layer 14-megapixel Foveon X3 sensor as their predecessors, but have a new True (Three-layer Responsive Ultimate Engine) II image processor aboard for improved image quality and processing speed. The DP2 has a new flare-reducing 41mm-equivalent F2.8 lens, and has adjusted controls, while the SD15 has a larger 3-inch LCD...but these seem to be the main improvements. We'll have to wait for more info from Sigma to see if the changes make a big difference or not, and for pricing and release dates. [DCWatch]

<![CDATA[ Digital Sculpture at Heathrow Airport Demonstrates that Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining ]]> Troika—-Cloud—-2008-_7117.jpgCommissioned for the atrium of the brand spanking new Terminal 5 at Heathrow, Cloud is a digital sculpture conceived by art and design studio Troika. The five-meter structure is suspended above the escalators and consists of three layers. Find out what lies beneath the black and silver flick-dots, and see the sculpture in action below the gallery.

On top of an aluminum body sit 4,638 dots that can turn from silver to black in one quick flick. Beneath that lies two electronic drivers, 134 distribution boards and over 16,500 feet of cable. Controlling the flip-dots was harder than normal, however, and Pharos Architectural Controls, a company which develops electronic controllers for lighting applications, had to fiddle around with the control parameters and rewrite firmware on the drivers.

I like the flicka-flicka noise as the Cloud changes color—It reminds me of the old-skool arrivals and departures boards in airports before everything went TV monitor-tastic. Terminal 5 opens on March 27 of this year, and if you're flying into London via BA, don't forget to look up as you hit the down escalator. [YouTube and Troika]

<![CDATA[ Writeable, Color e-paper ReKindles Our Interest ]]> Fuji Xerox has just demonstrated what may be the Holy Grail of e-paper—probably not the "E-Ink" technology found inside the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, but something similar—a prototype display that a user and write on. Three layers of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals are used (red, green and blue), meaning the display has a gel-like base.

Still flexible, the display can recognize "optical" writing, though probably not quickly. An eyes-on report mentions that the refresh rate is under a second, which while probably fast enough for quick marks, is not what you want to be handwriting a letter on. But we just had our boobie doodles in mind anyway. [techon]

<![CDATA[ Helio Dual-Sliding QWERTY Phone Unveiled - This is Their Smartphone ]]> heliophone.jpgThe secret's out at Helio. The Pantech PN-810, a three-layer-cake slider phone that has a regular dial pad and a keyboard has been seen on the FCC site sporting Helio branding. Despite being unusually thick—c'mon, those three layers have to add some heft—the phone does have EV-DO, a 2.1-megapixel camera, 260k TFT LCD, and Bluetooth.

We're willing to be that with this body and that feature set, this is their smartphone. If you were looking for a feature-heavy phone on Helio, this is your golden Wonka ticket.

And yeah, this is exactly why Apple announced the iPhone six months early.

<![CDATA[ HD DVD Turns It Up To 51GB With Triple Layer Goodness ]]> hddvd51.jpgToshiba's closed the gap between HD DVD and Blu-ray releases with the triple-layer 51GB HD DVD disc. That's one more than currently marketed 50GB Blu-ray movies.

One of the main ticks in the comparison sheet between Blu-ray and HD DVD was the higher storage capacity of BD (50GB discs just debuted a few months ago) compared to HD.

Going up to 51GB, the HD camp can finally say they're equal to BD in storage, even though it takes three layers to do it—which in turn amps up the price to make these discs. However, the 51GB disc doesn't exactly level the playing field, seeing as Blu-ray has discs of up to 200GB (8 layers) coming.

<![CDATA[ Toshiba Creates Three-Layered Disc ]]> Toshiba has been tinkering with the HD DVD and DVD disc formats, putting together a hybrid format with three layers that contain both formats. The DVD section will be playable on conventional DVD players, and with a firmware update, standard HD DVD players can play both formats.

So it looks like we'll be seeing either a single-layer 4.7GB DVD along with a dual layer 30GB HD DVD, or conversely, a dual-layer 8.5GB DVD and a single-layer 15GB HD DVD, all together on one disc. One more layer, lots more content.

This idea could add more capacity to those already-existing single-layer hybrid discs, where a movie is offered on DVD for use today and also includes a high-def HD DVD copy on the same disc for those who think someday they may be suckered into buying an HD DVD player. However, this is at cross purposes with movie studios, who prefer the idea of selling the same content over and over.

<![CDATA[ Antec Makes Fancy Limited Tower Case ]]> antec.jpg

W-O-W. Antec went through a lot of trouble to give us the P180 SPCR Advanced Super Midi Tower Case (and to name it, too). With dual chambers that isolate power supply and CPU into separate cooling zones with up to five, count 'em, FIVE, configurable fans and three-layer, sound-deadening panels that should make it whisper quiet, this is one high-end tower case. Throw in 11 drive bays, 7 expansion slots, 2 USB 2.0 ports, FireWire and audio connectors and it's certainly worth your time.

<![CDATA[ The SARS-killing mask ]]> Mitsubishi says they're going to start selling a facial mask with special SARS-killing enzymes embedded into its fabric:
The 3-millimeter-mask is made of three layers of fabric, and the sandwiched layer is woven with a natural enzyme. If the enzyme is touched by viruses having capsules, such as the SARS and influenza viruses, their capsules will melt and the viruses will die, according to the company officials.
