False. The amount of RAM in your system has nothing to do with your system's ability to play video in of itself.

If you have a bunch of apps open and then you try to play a video it might become sluggish because you're running low on available memory and the swapping to disk is causing system resources (CPU, disk controller, whatever) to be used.

But if your video is stuttering with 1 GB of RAM and nothing else open but the video player, then upgrading to 2 GB of RAM ain't going to do jack.

Mini and HD just seem to me to be two things that just don't go together. For me, HD is for the big screen.

Surely there must be comparisons to be drawn between watching HD on a small screen, and the optimal viewing distance for the size of an HD TV (the old 720p vs 1080 argument - e.g they look the same beyond a certain distance).

@CrispyAardvark: I think it's safe to say that the majority of people buying a netbook aren't using it to set it down on a table across the room and watch something on it. Netbooks are made for on the go use which will probably involve use in your lap, on a small desk, or on the traytable of the seat in front of you.

The way I see it, if you're trying to push just within the limits of cheaper hardware, you're always going to be disappointed. If a major concern is something like HD video, you'd do best to just spend the extra dough and get something with the extra overhead, rather than something that may not be able to do the next best thing some time in the immediate future. I wouldn't get a netbook with HD video in mind, but rather some SD vids and web surfing. If I want a machine that can reliably play an HD feature length film, I'm going to spend more for a powerful laptop that can do so, but that's just me.
