@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: Yes, $30. Because under the hood, there are major changes that developers can take advantage of in their programs. Many of the OS X built in apps are also reworked to use the new APIs, speeding up the system.

It's no different then Microsoft charging Windows Vista users to upgrade to Windows 7. Except that Leopard wasn't horribly broken due to driver issues at launch.

@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: Apple charges for things that it can charge for. If Apple can get away with charging for an iPod cradle when it used to include a cradle with the iPod, it will.

It's nothing unique to Apple either.

@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: No worries, was just pointing out the similarities between the two sides. Windows 7 is a refined and faster Vista, with many issues addressed, and a good upgrade. The same applies to Snow Leopard being a faster and refined Leopard.

I noticed the contexual menus looked a little different, but my eyes were not keen enough to discerne a change in font.

@Ryan Robinson: It's going to be $29 for Leopard users to upgrade to a system that fully supports 64-bit addressing. That alone should be worth it. But they are also making some usability changes on top of that and adding GCD to make it easier for programmers to make use of multi-core systems.

So yeah, in a sense it is a bit of a glorified serviced pack, but they're also charging a very reasonable price for the improvements it makes to the system.

@Ryan Robinson: That's what is known as the Law of the Efficient Market. The true value of an item is what the last person was willing to pay for it.

Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" was made with less than $100 in materials. But if someone is willing to pay $10 million for it, then its true value is $10 million.

@Ryan Robinson: Yes, they're charging $30 for an upgrade to the OS internals. Not really a service pack as it re-writes major portions of the OS to be completely 64 bit. Currently OSX is a 32/64 bit hybrid OS.

But, personally I could say the same about Windows 7 being Vista SP3 and having to pay for it.
