    In the best of all possible worlds, shouldn't AMD get a piece of this?

    Seeing as monopolies are not beneficial to anyone, this should help the Personal computer market. Of course if AMD doesnt step it up than nothing will happen and we will all continue to use Intel simply because that is our only choice.

    @eagles3_Wants NASA money to afford college.: Monopolies do kind of help the monopolists, which is why big companies will strive to become them, despite the rules against it.

    Sometimes monopolies even help consumers, which is why the government will occasionally allow them to develop, usually for emerging technologies. For example, a national telephone company was a gov't sanctioned monopoly that helped establish national telephone service in its early years. Domain registration was initially a gov't sanctioned monopoly that helped grow the internet.

    @Weihovah:

    Don't laugh. I can assure you Apple's almost certainly got a whole legal team working up defense strategies in case the EU decides to go after the iPod's near monopoly in the HD based digital music player market.
