<![CDATA[Samsung Achieves 160GB 1.8" Hard Disk Drive, Beats Only Self]]> This week, Samsung quietly let it slip that it had reached the 160GB mark for its 1.8" HDD, the Spinpoint N2. The previous record for 1.8" HDDs had been 120GB, held by, yep, Samsung. In case you're not an Apple fanboy, this is extra good news because 1.8" is the HDD format required by iPods. They are also making their way into teeny, tiny camcorders by Samsung and its customers competitors colleagues.

Pricing has not been announced, but the 120GB Spinpoint N2 costs $249, so the 160GB version will be higher still. And from what market research Samsung has done, there's no reason to lower prices just yet:

"The 1.8inch HDD market will grow at a tremendous pace with annual sales expected to increase up to 65% by 2010 as consumers demand smaller, more compact technology devices," states Andrew Higginbotham, director of hard drive sales and marketing, Samsung Semiconductor Inc.
According to TSR, the market research institute, the HDD camcorder segment of the camcorder market will grow from 4 million units in 2006 to over 8 million units by the end of 2011.
Sounds like the sky's the limit, at least until flash memory catches up in capacity—and price.

<![CDATA[Fujitsu's 2.5" HDD Breaks Storage and Speed Records]]> The world of hard drives isn't that exciting, but Fujitsu broke some records today with its new MHW2 BJ HDD, the first 2.5-inch laptop drive to hit 7,200 rpm and offer 160GB of storage, so not only is it fast, but it's also upping the storage capacity on laptops. <![CDATA[Hitachi Travelstar 5K160: Bigger than Mikey, but Groundbreaking Anyway]]> Hitachi calls the hard drive "the new bling," as exemplified by its Microdrive 3K8 ("Mikey") worn by the sumptuous model here. This post is not about that, but now that we have your attention, get your mind out of the gutter and think about hard drives for a minute. While desktop hard drives have been making steady progress toward gargantuan capacities—think 750GB— 2.5-inch notebook drive capacities and their connections have been wallowing in the mire, until now.

Hitachi is making an effort to change that, and it's first out of the gate with a 160GB SATA drive aimed at notebooks, its Hitachi Travelstar 5K160. Sure, Seagate is shipping a 160GB 2.5-inch drive, but it's only available with a parallel ATA connector. That's not going to play ball with the swankiest of new notebooks from Apple, Dell and others which feature SATA connectors. Seagate said it would ship a 2.5" SATA perpendicular drive last month, but now Hitachi has beaten them to the punch. The Travelstar 5K160 160GB SATA drive is available now for $279.
