This thing is all sorts of awesome. But, as a mkII owner, I'm tired of the 1.3x crop. I want full frame.
I understand that some people like the "reach" it gives, but that's something you can do with cropping in post (or it could have a 1.3 crop feature built in). My 15mm fisheye on my can't be made wider when I use it on a smaller sensor!
Before anyone says "Get the 1Ds!", I need the 10fps, and the 1Ds just doesn't cut it.
I guess I could always just switch to Nikon... #canon1dmarkiv
@S-Express has a pet troll: Nathan: Its not the wide so much as the distortion caused by the fish. With the 1.3 crop you aren't getting that outer edge so it just doesn't look the same. #canon1dmarkiv
@S-Express has a pet troll: Nathan: I shoot a lot of skateboarding. I have 8fps right now, but 10 would be better. That board can flip really fast sometimes. #canon1dmarkiv
@SejalGanaghur: You don't know much about Canon's, do you? The 1D has always been cropped for longer reach as most 1D users shoot sports or are photojournalist. The 1DS is FF, so yes, Nikon still has much to worry about. #canon1dmarkiv
@thetickler: Nikon users are like Windows users. They always try to beef up reasoning against the competitor, even when they are on the losing end. #canon1dmarkiv
@thetickler: I was just saying, since you brought up the 1DS, that it is in a different position in the marketplace than the 1D. The 1DS needs to be compared to a D3x and the 1D to the D3(s).
So why does Nikon need to worry because of the 1Ds? I don't see your point. Or are you just a blindly following Canon fanboy?
And for the record, both companies are equal, if you ask me. Gear chasing has nothing to do with how good of a photographer you really are. #canon1dmarkiv
@Assassin_Kensei: yeah. Nikon and Canon's are both good cameras. I just prefer not to run my BMW with a Ford engine. Contrary to the rumors, Nikon does NOT make sensors for the D3. They worked with Sony to design and produce them.
Don't believe me? Contact Nikon and ask for yourself. Takes a few tries, but you'll get someone who cracks. #canon1dmarkiv
@thetickler: Nikon designed them, they don't manufacture them. Nikon has decided, since they didn't have a solid way of building chips on their own, to outsource to Sony for manufacture.
However, you assume, falsely, that Sony can't make a good chip. #canon1dmarkiv
@S-Express has a pet troll: Nathan: It's really amazing how similar they are. I almost feel like they are the same consumers, making the same mistakes. #canon1dmarkiv
@thetickler: And I originally pointed out that their full frame isn't for the same market. Canon doesn't have a high-speed pro full frame for sports shooters. Which I have heard complaints and praises for this decision. #canon1dmarkiv
a) Go out and shoot
b) Become a better photographer (hint: it's the light, not the camera)
c) Use gear that works, and stop bickering
d) Promote the arts, not industry

iomatic, hey, I'm an idiot, but I'll comment anyway was unstarred
@iomatic (I know I'm an idiot, but I'll comment anyway): @thetickler: Or for that matter, FPS if you need it for certain projects. You can't become a true artist without knowing the technical concerns of your medium. Its just like the arguments about what film was better. It is just, we don't have film to argue about, usually, so we argue about sensors. And since the bodies now do more than they used to, we get to argue about those too. #canon1dmarkiv
@szrimaging: agreed. Nikons have their advantages as do Canon and depending on what you shoot determines your equipment. Their differences nowadays are often negligible, it's a matter of preference more or less, lens ownership, and even design. #canon1dmarkiv
@thetickler: That's a hilarious canon fanboy comment if I've ever seen one. DxO Mark still has the Nikons beating the Canons. They keep leap-frogging over each other. There isn't going to be a mass defection towards Canon because of this or the 7D. Grow the hell up. #canon1dmarkiv
While the 1.3x crop factor's a bit of a downer, everything else about this camera is beastly and has me almost enthused- besides the fact that I don't have $5000 to spend on it.
But I still wouldn't put my ISO above 800, at the highest. That kind of noise, eech. #canon1dmarkiv
@Kyle Mistry: But with these new cameras, there isn't any noise at 800. I have a 1D mkII, and my 1600 looks worse than the Nikon D3s at 12,800. The 1D mkIV will also look amazing. #canon1dmarkiv
The original videos put out for the the Nikon D90 were also amazing. Who cares about super dark night time video. What about regular everyday video of your kid at a baseball game. This is where the D90 sucks in my opinion. For $3500 more maybe the 1D will be better? #canon1dmarkiv
@phunnyballs: all sorts of kits to add rails, matte boxes, handles, follow focuses, viewers, etc to DSLRS now. So you can use DSLRs just like a video or movie cam now. #canon1dmarkiv
Yes it's crop, but that's what the 1D series has always been. It's the 1Ds series that's full frame, and I'm sure the Mark IV of that will be announced in the next 6 months. #canon1dmarkiv
So I guess 1.3x crop (APS-H). While it isn't full-frame like the Nikon D3s, a lot of sports photographers like the extra reach that the 1.3x crop gives you. And still others appreciate a full-frame camera. To each his own.
Looking at the video Vincent Laforet took with the 1D4 it does show how far Canon has come with the HD video in their dSLRs, and how behind Nikon is in this department.
I know this is off topic, but has anyone picked up the lil Canon S90? Wow, wow wow. High iso shots, even at 2000 is usable. The blacks are black. I have a G10 and anything above 800 was pretty poopy. Compared photos with similar shots from my Mark II and for a camera this size, I was blown away. Anyway, it gives me good faith the new 1D will blow the lid off. #canon1dmarkiv

@szrimaging: Good one, hadn't thought of that.
I would think 14mm or even 15mm would still be plenty wide enough on a 1.3 crop for that though?
I've used 15mm for motorsports on the 1D series, but only for static shots in the pits (as attached) - Didn't need 10 fps... #canon1dmarkiv

Anyone want to take a guess at how much all the additional rigging and grip cost?
I don't think that *anyone* who buys a 1D IV would i) do it for video (sports cam, no?) ii) then go shell out on all that crap.
Conversely, the Nikon videos tend to be shot by one person. And a tripod.
Hmm. #canon1dmarkiv
