what is the Solid State drive for? i have had mass storage externar hd and after the third one stopped working for no apparent reason y stopped buying them. Now these SSD are here. Do they wistand long flights.? cause they would usually get ficked up when i traveled. even when i carry them with me.
@Fuji-kun: SSD= No Moving Parts. No heads to crash, and no spinning platters to suck battery power. It will read and write flawlessly even if you're riding a pogo stick through an earthquake.
It is, essentially, the future of storage technology. A few years ago when capacities were still quite small and prices were higher than a crack whore, pundits claimed HDDs wouldn't get replaced for a long, long time to come. However, the pace at which SSD technology is advancing would seem to indicate that they will be overtaking HDD technology within just about a year. HDDs will go the way of the 3.5" floppy as you see them getting put it only budget systems, like $300 advertising 10 TBs of HDD storage because they can't give the HDDs away. Meanwhile laptops, gaming systems and such will have 1 to 2 TBs SSD standard.
I also wouldn't be surprised to see, within 3 years, that Microsoft releases their OS on an SSD that you drop in and it auto-configures.
i want it if it's 50 bucks. that's all i can afford right now.
but seriously, this thing is gonna be expensive. I remember buying my 750GB HD for over 300 bucks just a year ago. Now I can get a 1TB drive for $99.99 (the penny counts).
Give it a few years, they'll be cheaper than a crack whore on a diet...a drug diet. ZING!
@Delta_One: Same. When I purchased my first multistage interplanetary space vehicle, loosely based on Apollo era tech, it cost me well into the billions in 2009 dollars and took forever to get anywhere. Today, I'm able to travel from Andromeda to the Magellanic Cloud at a fraction of the cost and time. Three cheers for progress!
I order from deepdiscountdvd.com all the time. No shipping, no sales tax, and their regular prices are cheaper than anywhere else. I love their usual 20% off sales near year end. Never seen them go to 25%.

I know what you mean. I paid $50 for my 1GB flash drive a few years ago.
