I'm not sure I understand the purpose of this. Steering wheel mounted buttons are shaped and placed in such a way so you know by feel what button you're on. DO people look down to see what button their pressing?

Also, If this display is inside the car then you're refocusing your eyes off the road anyway to see the display. How is this different than just looking at the buttons?

I'm confuseled...

I guess it would be a little better since your peripheral vision may still notice things in the road, but you're actually right - the studies I've seen on cel phone use say that distraction is distraction, even if you're looking right at the road and don't have your hands occupied by something else.

@bver100: right- but the bottom line here is that you're looking away from the road. Whether you're looking away to look at the speedometer or looking away to look at the buttons you're still looking away. This does nothing to reduce distractions.

I liked the idea better when they were putting it in a HUD. So you could keep your eyes on the road and not the dashboard.

Yeah, staring intently at one part of the dashboard will get you just as killed as staring intently at another part of the dashboard.
