This has been a big month for big-time cameras. First we we first saw the Hasselblad H3DII-50 and its whopping 50-megapixel sensor, which was topped the following week by the Phase One's P65+. The Leaf AFi 10 medium format camera falls in the middle of the war over sensor-size with a 56x36mm TWF sensor that cranks out a 56 megapixel resolution across the entire width of the 6x6 sensor area.

Hasselblad H3DII-50 has 50-Megapixel Sensor, Double the Largest 35mm Sensor
The new H3DII-50 from Hasselblad packs in Kodak's 50-megapixel sensor. This measures 36mm x 48mm, and is thus double the size of the largest 35mm DSLR sensors, and even more than double the sensors used in low-mid range DSLRs. The sheer size of the sensor means it takes about 1.1 seconds per frame, but clearly you're sacrificing speed for professional ultra-high quality. It's got a 3-inch screen, integrated CCD cooler and can shoot up to ISO400. There's no word on pricing, so you'll have to wait until closer to its October launch to find out how much cash it'll cost you (rather a lot.) [Hasselblad]

Japanese TV broadcaster NHK has demonstrated Super Hi-Vision, their whopping 32 megapixel, 8K (7680 x 4320) ultra-high definition projector technology using two LCoS projectors with a combined 8,000 lumens brightness and a towering 6.6m x 3.7m 300-inch projection screen. For those of you who are counting, that absolutely obliterates the 4K (3840 x 2,160) full-HD standard. They have even developed a matching 8K studio camera. Once again this raises the question: is there such a thing as too much HD? [CNET]

In case you were wondering when the final treaty would be signed in the megapixel war, I think today is as good as any day to call it. There's a 12-megapixel GE—that is to say, brand-licensing no-name Chinese manufacturer—camera selling on HSN for "under" $200. It even lists a 2.7" LCD, an SD/SDHC card slot (though up to 4GB only, so not sure the deal there), and shooting up to ISO 3200. Despite all this, our suspicion is that its pictures won't be exactly Canon-grade to say the least. At any rate, a test of this baby will answer once and for all whether megapixels matter. [HSN]

Sony's 25-Megapixel 35mm Image Sensor Is Up For Grabs
Today Sony researchers in Tokyo unveiled a digital SLR component that's actually drool-worthy: a CMOS sensor the size of 35mm film that registers 24.81 effective megapixels—close to 26 million total.
