Ok, Overall, I like the update. Bigger font and icon sizes, dynamic themes are good (got the free Afrika theme the Japanese PSN store and bought the LBP theme.) Audio output options rock and I like the dimming of the background when folders are open.
What I don't like is the grey background tab for the friend's list. It totally wrecks the layout for any theme you have going on. Options to change the color or make the tab transparent with unaffected text would be nice. The new info bar is annoying. It can be turned off thank goodness. The PS3 logo at startup is stupid. If the person turning on the ps3 doesn't know that it's a ps3 they're about to use, then that person qualifies as the idiot of the year. It's redundant and totally unnecessary.
What I wanted to see but is sadly missing? We still can't log in as invisible (like Live) For user that have large libraries of mp3s or videos, there's no faster way to find a specific title other than scrolling.
We can't use preview videos already on the HDD as backgrounds for dynamic themes.
No cross game chat sucks too. But, overall I like the update.

It's been a staple of gaming systems for at least the last two generations. While it's not entirely necessary, it's mostly unobtrusive (that time would just be a black screen or some other loading screen anyway) and doesn't detract from the experience.
I saw the demo of this a couple weeks back and I just think Sony should outsource their UI design to Apple. Seriously do these guys have any idea what they are doing?
@soulfinger: You've never seen the travesty that is the NXE have you?
And this gets compared to an "Apple like design" more often than you'd apparently think.
I believe Phil Schiller that Apple’s policy is not to reject App Store dictionaries for containing swear words. However, it’s clear this policy has not been consistently enforced by the App Store review team.
And that is the major problem here - not just with dictionaries but throughout the App Store. The approval guidelines have to apply to every single app and not some unlucky few ones.
The point of this story, like all of these App Store stories, is fundamentally not the justice or injustice of a decision by Apple, but rather the opacity of their rejection process. While many people aren't disturbed by Apple's monopolistic control of all iPhone software, almost everyone agrees that a capricious and cryptic rejection policy is a terrible way to run a business, and a terrible system to be participant in. A hundred emails from Schiller won't solve this, even if he (somehow) proves that Apple is justified in each case. The point is the deliberate opacity: no amount of PR is going to solve that. They need to change their system, or hope they don't get big enough that the government will step in and do it for them.
Is "17+" a normal age rating in the US?
In the UK you can't get a driving license until you are 17. But other than that (which is a big deal), there are no (legal) benefits to being 17 (as opposed to being 16)
I assume that the age ratings for apps are different in other countries (like they are with video games, DVDs, etc), am I correct in my assumption?
@Scotland: Our system is actually pretty straight-forward.

@92BuickLeSabre:
In order to add even more confusion to the chart, the cigarette age also needs to be variable. In the Long Island counties of Nassau and Suffolk, the smoking age was raised to 19.
@My Secret Identity: I'd forgotten about getting a hotel room. Or...I mean, I'd never thought about it...or something.
And cristiana, I had no idea about the smoking age. 19? How random.
When the iPhone was first released I said "beautiful phone, but Apple is too controlling, right?" ... (crickets). Now everyone wants to wise up and wag their collective finger at Apple. Well it's too late. We've already bitten into the bait and latched on to the hook. Now all that awaits us is a deep fat fryer and some delicious tartar sauce.
Our Chinese-English dictionary app - HippoDict - went through almost the same censorship story in January. The App Store didn't have age ratings at that time, so fortunately we didn't have to deal with that ridiculousness. The worst part was that a bunch of other C-E dictionary apps had and continue to have "objectionable content" apparently without issue, making the App Store singling us out particularly arbitrary and frustrating.
Why is everyone reacting so negatively to this? We are subjected to this vile language everywhere we turn these days. It is refreshing to know that Apple is at least protecting us during those blissful moments of our lives when we are privileged enough to clasp their almighty phone. Wait... why are they putting so many of us onto these trains?
