I had a nice dinner with Lisa's family, and then we headed out to a local temple not far from their house in Ebisu. I took along the Canon 30D DSLR, my favorite low light shooter ever, and the 18-85mm f/4.0-5.6 lens with image stabilization. More on the camera after the jump, but let me not forget the point of this message.
All of us at Gizmodo wish you a happy and prosperous 2007, filled with love and gadgets.

The Cam: As you can see from the above photo, at 3200 ISO grain is much better than what you'd in other DSLRs. The lens has image stabilizing, true, but what I've noticed is that its slowness takes away some of the charm. So I'd actually prefer the cheapo kit lens, which is faster, over the IS lens, if it weren't for the zoom (55mm vs. 85mm). Crazy, I know. Below, there's a gallery of a few more photos I took haphazardly.

I've pushed the saturation a bit, because I feel like I'm addicted to the Nikon D40's Skittles-like color filter. Accurate? No. Fun? Yes.

<![CDATA[Pentax DSLR Acclaim: Both the K100D and K10D Receive Great Scores]]> Looks like Canon and Nikon have another worthy competitor in the DSLR range.

First, Mark McClusky and Sean Captain give the K100D the Editor's Choice in Wired's Test issue. He chooses the budget-ish DSLR over the top of the line Canon 30D and Nikon D200 because of built in image stabilization and low noise at high light sensitivity modes ISOs (1600 is its max.)

Then Pop Photo gives the higher end K10D a similar thumbs up for the same low noise characteristics. The camera also gets...

high marks for its fog, snow, and dust resistant shell. Pop Photo has a small but annotated gallery that shows off the camera's ability to shoot low light.

<![CDATA[Dealzmodo Supplemental: Amazon Clearing out Canon Gear, Hinting At a Future Release?]]> Amazon is having a rebate fiesta with Canon gear. A wide variety of Canon lenses have rebates as low as $10 all the way up to $100 (if you buy multiple). They are also clearing out some high-end DSLR cameras. The 5D now has a $300 mail-in-rebate and the 30D has a $100 mail-in-rebate with double rebates if you buy more Canon stuff (like lenses with the cameras). Jump to get the low-down on all of the rebates and the linkage.

A very confusing move by Canon. Could this clear out mean some new bomb diggity hotness is coming sooner than expected? Or is Amazon and Canon toying with my heart (as always)?

<![CDATA[PMA News: Canon EOS 30D]]> We've been eagerly awaiting new Canon SLRs from this year's PMA Show in Orlando and we're happy to report that the EOS line has gotten its first upgrade. The 30D is a 8-megapixel digicam with 2.5-inch LCD and the addition of spot metering.

Interestingly enough, the 30D is cheaper than its successor, the 20D and will sell for $1,399 in March. Quite honestly, the upgrade seems rather limited, but slow and steady wins the race, eh?
