    @UnicornMaster: Any 64 bit OS should be able to handle it. Whether or not there are system chipsets/bios updates that can handle it is another question altogether.

    So what OS will allow for this much ram and be able to actually utilize it?

    @bonedog73: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition supports 128 GB of RAM and 16 terabytes of virtual memory address space, as compared to 4 GB of both physical RAM and virtual memory address space for 32-bit Windows XP Professional. [www.microsoft.com]

    .... RAM limitations with Vista 64-bit? Actually, it depends on what edition of Vista you are running: Home Basic is limited to 8GB, Home Premium is limited to 16GB and the other editions (Business, Enterprise and Ultimate) let you get all the way up to 128GB. [www.realtime-vista.com]

    So aren't these chips basically the same type that are used in video cards?

    Just imagine; a future where everyone will stop asking if it will play Crysis.

    @Zahir Mohammed: Like RAM, the price of livers vary widely. Chicken and calf livers are fairly affordable. Cow livers, while chewier, are even less; goose livers from Périgord are more. If you're looking for a special occasion liver and money is no object, human livers will set you back even more than goose, particularly viable ones suitable for transplant.

    @Bryan: When electrons in matter can be harvested for computation, a rock the size of your fist will be more powerful than all the computers currently on Earth combined, and the human race will begin consuming all available matter on Earth, the Solar System, and beyond for computation.

    @yogibimbi: I'd bank on roughly 2011-2012. Cause it's still going to be at least half a year until these things start showing up in PC's. And a year or 2 until they have become cheaper. And then you gotta wait for a new Mac iteration because of Apple's communist computer ways. And then hope they put in these massive DDR3 sticks.

    @Kakkoister: So it's too hard to instal one of those yourself? Most people I know who use macs just thow away the original sticks when they put in sticks they'we bought somewhere else for a lot less.

    Also, the motherboards of Macs other than the Mac Pro don't support more than 4 Gb (6 with some weird tricks) so if you talk abour current mac and it isn't a Mac Pro you'll have to get a new computer once they bring out models with motherboards that support that kind of ammount of RAM.

    Also, Communist? Isn't that as capitalist as it can get? Communism would be to make the computers so fututre proof you can still hook up the latest devices even 15 years in the future...

    @L_A_G:

    A) these (nor the 16GB iteration) are actually out yet.

    B) no one has even mentioned the manufacture of SoDIMMS (which will at least FIT in a laptop.

    C)No Macs currently support triple-channel memory, in fact only Core i7 rigs do, so until Mac adopts Core i7 cpus/mobos you are SOL.

    The story specifically mentions DDR3, I don't know if this will trickle down to DDR2, but they didn't mention it and I'd be surprised if RAM MFGs would spend the money to implement this tech for a RAM standard that is already sooo cheap and is (or is very close to being) past its retail prime...
