In reply to HP Wants To Sell You a Carrier-Subsidized Netbook For Cheap With 3G Data
It's a great idea in principle, but for me, the issue would be the monthly cost. At $60-80/month [depending on carrier] for unlimited data plans via 3G cards for laptops, even if the netbook was free, the contract I would be stuck in for 2 years would cost about $2,000.

I think the issue is target audience; netbooks are intended for people for casual internet use. $60-80/month is too expensive for me for just casual use. If I REALLY need the internet on-the-go that much, I would probably be needing a laptop that can do more multi-tasking with better performance.

I think the kind of people who pay $60-80/month either have the money [in which case why not a MacBook Air or ThinkPad X301 or Latitude E4200] or the need for heavy on-the-go usage, which usually means they have a company paying for it [and probably a laptop as well].

Sounds great until they decide to cap / penalize your bandwidth usage.

This would definitely need to include a hefty discount on the netbook if you go with like a two year contract. If they did that I would also buy one. Now this may seem a little off topic but isn't anyone else bothered by the off-centered touch pad design plaguing more and more netbooks and notebooks? It bothers the piss out of me.

All you posters pining for 4G do realize that LTE (4G) won't be rolled out before late 2010 at the earliest, right? Also, you do know that WiMAX won't have close to the national coverage that WWAN enjoys (at least in the US) until 2011 or so, right? Geez.

I'd take it, but only if they gave some sort of discount on more than one plan. Say, 30% off the cost of two, but only if you renew the existing plan to last as long as the other one. And it would have to be 4G. Maybe bundle a 3G plan for your phone and a 4G plan for your Laptop? It'd end up being massively expensive, but if it was less than, say $75 a month, it would be competitive. (Sprint's laptop connect is $40 a month.

AT&T cuts your phone's "unlimited" data plan off after 5gigs... As long as they don't do that, this might be a good deal. But only if it's 4G. 3G + A computer would just be irritatingly slow.

They have to work through aggregate data just like they did with voice. There is no way I would pay for separate data plans for person and device.

This is a really cool idea, but I hope they can execute. I don't know if the problem is with the ability to provide internet or the willingness to spend on infrastructure. Who knows?

It looks like HP and Verizon are going the way way that O2 has in the UK.

Yup, I'm going to call Verizon on this because AT&T has already been complaining about losing money because of data.

I'm not buying a carrier subsidized netbook unless it has 4G. Be it WiMax or LTE idc, but I gotta get me some good dl speeds!
