@nat lyon: Majority? I think the statistics in nationwide surveys prove they're just a very vocal minority.
But you should have heard them yelling about how Giz isn't "allowed" to post gadget news related to politics during the Obama v McCain campaign. Actually, a few still bitch when Obama-related posts go up.
@tomboygirl: With flavored tea - like apple cinnamon (note: heat glass bong slowly under the hot water stream of your sink before pouring boiling tea in,or the glass might crack).
I thought I was reading "High Times" for a second. I have no problems with people who like pot but its weird to read an article on a mainstream blog encouraging it.
Wait, so you mean that Gizmodo was able to get their hands on one of these to TEST IT OUT? Or did a friend of a friend happen to have one? Did it get sent? How did this come up!?!?
my right ling collapsed about 2 months ago (all better now, thankfully), i haven't smoked anything since, would this volcano increase my chance of lung collapsing again?
I've never understood the lengths to which potheads will go, especially since liquor exists. Appearance/bravery/performance enhancing, legal, and socially acceptable liquor, "it's the perfect drug®".
@junyo: I politely disagree. While alcohol certainly makes you feel good, I'm going to have to quote Bill Hicks on this one and say, Alcohol is violent, but have you ever seen anyone, anywhere that was high get in a fight? No! Why? Because you're too chillax to fucking care buddy bumped you accidentally. Alcohol makes people crazy. Weed makes people awesome.
@robot-shmobot: Couldn't agree more. When people get drunk, people get injured. Or killed. Or maybe just cheated on. Or maybe just get in a fight that you can't remember the cause of.
When people get high, movies starring Method Man get made.
You could argue that culture is the real victim here, but I'd take a shitty Method Man movie any day if it means some kid doesn't get smacked by his drunk parent.
@Barry99705: I wouldn't say that this is the case. People enjoy the buzz of whatever it is they're taking without abusing it, and it doesn't somehow alter/improve their general perspective on life. I'd chance to say that a fair amount of people who ingest alcohol or weed socially don't wake up suddenly realizing that their sober reality is a big steaming shit pile. Recreational drug use is obviously not going to appeal to everyone.
Think of it, in at least one respect, to reading fiction. We read fiction to be entertained, and we suspend belief to relate to and believe what we're reading to invest a certain temporary relationship with the characters and story. Escapism is often done for fun, not to forget a shitty life.
@AndPreciousLittleofThat: You are making a specious argument. People driving high kill people. High people can cheat on their partners. I saw a guy who was really high off a third story balcony once. Both drugs affect your mind and judgment.
@junyo: Wow, baiting potheads is more entertaining than baiting Apple fanboys (me thinks there quite a bit of overlap). Alcohol is my social lubricant of choice, but whatev's bitches.
Peter Mrozik: So much for the "happy, friendly pothead" theory. Hint: When you're insulting people on the internet because they don't like the drug you use, you might want to cut back.
@Xeno wishes there was a preview button: Neithe alcohol or weed will prevent you from knowing when you're doing something wrong. For that you'd have to be on a hallucinogen.
@bartek: Meh weed in moderation is hardly a drug. There have been studies showing alcohol to be more harmful and yet no one gets their panties up in a bunch about beer posts. Plus vaporizing weed makes it almost, ALMOST good for you.
@bartek: This is a true gadget, even if this gadget's use is not up to everyone's individual standards. This is no different from gadgets posted on this site meant for sexual purposes.
In either case, the potential of destroying your liver and causing severe jaundice is not as likely with vaporized weed as it is with alcohol.
However, equally as plausibly, MJ can help with stress modulation and anxiety disorders, pain as an analgesic, and with dietary disorders (due to hormonal increase of appetite hormones).
But to say that it is GOOD for you is silly. Whether it should be illegal is irrelevent, but it is most definitely a drug, plain and simple.
@eagles3: You know, I have to take the stand that I am against the use of all illicit drugs, including marijuana. In the case of the ganj, though, it's not really about the effect of the drug or its addictive qualities or what-have-you. It's more about the lengths it drives people to in order to get it and / or profit from it.
Here in San Luis Obispo county, there has been a RIDICULOUS amount of home-invasion robberies (at gunpoint, mind you) specifically targeting college students and folks with medical marijuana cards that just happen to have a nice big stash of weed in their homes. Just a couple of weeks ago, a dude was murdered by a shotgun at point-blank range over a couple ounces of dope.
My main point is, the weed itself is not the issue here, it's the gnarly stuff people are willing to do because of it.
@ɟɹnsǝɥʇɥdɹnɯ: I'd wager that anyone who is inclined to rob someone for some weed would do it for just about anything -- video games, cell phones, laptops, whatever. Weed is worth a lot of money, so it's not necessarily addiction that is causing these robberies that you speak of. And if you're a thug, you probably think it's a kick to go rob some college kids and steal their weed. I'm betting cash was the real target and the weed just happened to be there...
AND if weed was legal, like cigarettes or alcohol, you wouldn't see these alleged robberies.
@shiftyeyedgoat: I'm calling bullshit. Nice article. I bet you didn't think anyone would really read through the whole thing and decipher the medical l33t-speak. I did though.
Let me sum it up for everyone.
Context: weed effects learning and makes you high (no shit).
Purpose: To test the effects of THC vs cannabidiol, the 2 major psychoactive drugs in weed.
Test: 15 white dudes who are non-pot smokers were each given doses of THC, cannabidiol, and a placebo (separately, not all at once). Following each dose they were given a verbal learning test.
Results: THC makes you high as shit (wow, didn't know that!) Cannabidiol does not make you high. NEITHER drug effected the patients performance in the verbal learning tests (haha).
Conclusion: (copied from the article): The modulation of mediotemporal and ventrostriatal function by Delta9-THC may underlie the effects of C. sativa on verbal learning and psychotic symptoms, respectively.
Please note the word MAY. No where in the study does it definitively say THC or any other drug in weed can or will cause damage to your brain. Let alone "extensive" damage, as you claim. Soooo, pardon my french, but you are full of shit. This study is inconclusive. The best they can say is weed "might" damage your ability to learn, but if it can, this test did not prove it.
Now if you would like to show us a study that actually proves marijuana can in any way damage your brain, please do so. I implore you.
@stradric: Not to get too deeply into this, but you just invalidated your own point by saying that if weed was legal, you wouldn't see these alleged robberies. The video games, cell phones, laptops and whatever that you speak of are completely legal, yet still stolen all the time. The value of weed being even higher (legal or otherwise) is what makes it a good target for robberies.
And these are not "alleged" robberies. There has been an established pattern with several groups in the area (and other areas) specifically targeting people with a medical use card or who are legally allowed to grow for a certified user. This is not coincidence.
@marm0lade: Congratulations, Marmolade, you get most snarky post of the day award!
Now, your amazing abstract-reading powers aside, the aforementioned experiment was a psychological experiment using pharmacology with little to no emphasis on biochemistry and neurological impairment mostly because killing the subjects and doing a post-experiment analysis might be considered unethical.
As a point of pure practicality, it happened to be the first result I found on a rather generic search for "marijuana" and "brain" on pubmed, which is why I stated "This is just one of the many articles you will find on pubmed showing the extensive damage MJ can cause your brain." Then qualified saying it can also have many positive effects on your system as a medicine, but should no less seriously be considered a drug and any major controlled substance, which was my major grievance with eagels3's original statement.
Also, the tests were scientifically conclusive using biostatistics, but given a small sample size of 15, and given that it was a psychological experiment, not a neurological study, it is prudent to use tempered language rather than sweeping grand statements.
If you wish to know more, by all means, search away and learn what drugs will do to your physiology! Here's a sample search with "marijuana+damage" as the search items.
@shiftyeyedgoat: dude I don;t even know anymore what you are talking about usingbigwords and stuff like that lololol heehehe dude chill out and enjoy the fuckin summerair and the birds and shit.
@ɟɹnsǝɥʇɥdɹnɯ: You seem to be missing a crucial point. If pot is legalized, it becomes a lot cheaper. Pot is incredibly cheap to grow. Most of the cost is absorbed into the black market due to the incredible risk taken by the growers, importers, wholesalers, and dealers. They all make a huge killing because their asses are on the line.
If it becomes a no risk business venture, you are talking about a cash crop that grows like a, yes, weed.
The result of this cheaper weed has the following effects on your scenario. People are less likely to rob other people of it because a) they will be more likely to afford it themselves. b) the resale value of it will be very low. c) the likelihood that the victim will report the robbery is far greater.
Do people steal cell phones and lap tops? Yes. Those things are expensive. If pot was legal, people wouldn't need to have hundreds of dollars of pot at their house. They'd buy it like they purchased any other store-bought item. As needed.
@Brodka: Ah, but you are operating under the false assumption that legalizing it would make it cheaper. In all probability, the only scenario in which legalizing marijuana would ever come to fruition is one in which the government taxes the hell out of it, making it quite possibly even more expensive than it is now.
Plus, we're not talking about schwag here, dude. People are still going to be cultivating the more potent strains which will retain their proportionally higher value.
@shiftyeyedgoat: Much more well-regarded sources say that while weed may impair the brain while high, there are no long-term effects. even daily users will have no linger effect once they stop for a few days.
Alcohol on the other hand does irreperable damage to the brain.
Furthermore, it's harder to stop drinking caffeine than it is to stop smoking weed.

Also, marijuana can be exceedingly harmful to your brain with anywhere near regular use. Don't believe me? Modulation of mediotemporal and ventrostriatal function in humans by Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol: a neural basis for the effects of Cannabis sativa on learning and psychosis. This is just one of the many articles you will find on pubmed showing the extensive damage MJ can cause your brain.
However, equally as plausibly, MJ can help with stress modulation and anxiety disorders, pain as an analgesic, and with dietary disorders (due to hormonal increase of appetite hormones).
