So when's that OS X update for true working 8GB support going to come, Apple?
Two words: Snow Leopard. Don't expect any major overhauls in any of the point updates from Apple until 10.6. Leopard was made to carry people into 64-bit systems, but Leopard is essentially turning into a stopgap, as the first build of SL is already out to testers.
@daftrok: Actually, in some ways Vista is superior to Leopard. The 64 bit version of Vista, really is 64 bit. Currently Leopard is a hybrid 32/64 bit OS.
@Lite: One notable upshot to having a hybrid disc is that having a single Leopard disc allows you to use that one copy on both 32 and 64-bit PowerPC and Intel computers in your household.
I did some research on unmatched RAM, the consensus was that, in every macbook pro that supports dual-channel, increased RAM always outweighed the "performance decrease", to the point where many people questioned if there really was such a decrease at all.
Didn't you guys just write an article about how powerful firmware updates were? Is there any doubt in your minds that snow leopard (if not a future 10.5.x) will support 8gb just fine?
@lpranal: One would think that, but for example while early Core 2 Duo systems from Apple use a 64 bit cpu, the chipset is only a 32 bit one, so you cannot run Vista 64 (with driver support) for the most part. I have read of some people piecing the drivers together from scratch, but what a pain...
The new RAM that these notebooks use is a tad more expensive than the previous kit. A good cheap source for Mac memory is here: [eshop.macsales.com] and here, the price for the 4GB set is similar to that on the BTO options in the Apple site. I'd like to see OWC offer more than 4 gigabytes, per this news, but I don't see how most people can't manage on 4, though, 6 sounds sweet. I think even I'll do that just cuz I like to be excessive sometimes.
Sorry for the stupid question, but why is it that 8gb of RAM gives OS X convulsions? I suspect the mental health industry might be very interested in the answer. I seem to recall attempts to remove 2gb of brain matter in the past to cure similar issues.

I think they're still baking in the oven. Should be a little while longer till they're ready.

I get my memory from [transintl.com] . Good prices, and good return/exchange policies.
