Turns out, the actual number is right there in the middle—chip supplier Ramjet has tested and officially confirmed that the new MacBooks can support 6GB RAM via one 2GB module and one 4GB module. But why not eight?

According to the rep I spoke to, Ramjet's tests and previous experiences by others have shown that 8GB of RAM in a notebook throws OS X into fits, making it unstable for actual use. Ramjet claims though that 6GB is a screamer—utilizing a fresh new 4GB 1066 SO-DIMM paired with a 2GB; the performance gained by having an extra two gigs negates the performance loss that tends to follow from having an unmatched pair of differently sized modules. Sadly, that combo will set you back around $675 at Ramjet ($600 for the 4GB module alone). But it's possible.

So when's that update for true working 8GB support on these notebooks going to come, Apple? [Ramjet, Mac Rumors]

<![CDATA[Apple Confirms 4GB Nano]]> Following the appearance of mysterious images this morning, Apple has apparently confirmed the existence of a new 4GB nano. Speaking with an Apple spokeswoman, Reg Hardware discovered that the company made a “limited number of 4GB iPod nanos for some international markets." Just how many were shipped out and to what countries specifically remains a mystery. Whether this is some sort of test market for a wider launch is also unknown at this time.

<![CDATA[Aexea KeyXpress Data Key Flashdrive Could Hide on Your Key Ring]]> Brando's Aexea KeyXpress flash drives are designed to really make key-ring data portability true: they're shaped like keys, and are about as thin as your average door or car key (about 0.12-inches thin.) They're in three colors, have 4GB of flash storage aboard, come with a similarly tiny lanyard and that's about all you need to know. Oh: they cost $27. For those of you keeping track, SanDisk's non-HG Extreme III's can only muster 18MBps speeds. Naturally, the PRO-HG will be aimed squarely at users with high end cameras and camcorders who don't mind dropping $90 and $150 on a 4GB or 8GB card. Available starting in June. <![CDATA[Gizzy and Maggie, Flash Drives Disguised as Maggots or Worse]]> Meet Gizzy the Data Worm (pictured at left), and her maggoty friend Maggie, who both appear to be stomach-turning creepy-crawlies but actually can pack 4GB in the USB flash drives nestled snugly in their plushy little bellies. Hey, is that thing named "Gizzy?" We've been called that before. Could they have named it after our humble website here? Nah. Our namesake wouldn't be so, uh, gross, would it? Wouldn't it be more sophisticated? Anyway, if your taste leans toward plushy maggots or unidentified hairy squirmy worms named Gizzy, consider dropping around 66 bucks for each of these. <![CDATA[Samsung's Bang & Olufsen Phone Coming in 17 Days]]> Samsung and Bang & Olufssen have just thrown up a teaser site for their Serenata phone, which comes at us in just 17 days. What the phone has internally or even what it looks like is still a mystery on the site, but putting two and two together from earlier leaks you get a phone with 4GB flash memory, MPEG-4 video, 240x240 display, HSDPA and UMTS 3G, and also an iPod-esque scroll wheel. If the past leaks are correct, this is what the phone will look like—an electric razor. [Serenata via Electronista]

<![CDATA[Why You Probably Can't Use 4GB of RAM on Your PC]]> There's a reason why you probably can't use 4GB of RAM on your current machine. No, we don't mean "can't" as in you won't be able to hit this much unless you open up 20 applications at the same time, but more like your machine physically cannot take advantage of 4GB of RAM.

Long story short (cutting out the technical details because we've forgotten everything we learned in our computer science lectures), if you're running a 32-bit operating system, you will only be able to address 32-bits of memory at a time. Multiply that out and you get 4GB, but when you take into consideration the memory reserved for video RAM and bios space, you won't be able to hit all 4GB.

Point being? Get 3GB and you should do fine. Either that, or get a 64-bit operating system.

<![CDATA[Snow Drive: The $20,000 White Gold Thumb Stick]]> Available from the Mii Store—no association to the Miis on Nintendo Wii—the 4GB Snow Drive is made out of 18 carat white gold with "three strip of 1.44ct white diamonds." So how much does white gold and 96 diamonds cost you? How about 9,950 ($19,018). No? Perhaps sir would fancy something from the Wal-Mart department?

If Travis had this drive, there's no way he would have let someone pee on it. Or at the very least, would have cleaned it off before wearing it around his neck again.

<![CDATA[SanDisk 4GB SDHC Card]]> SanDisk joins Panasonic in the SDHC with their announcement of a 4GB Class 2 SDHC card. These SDHC cards, if you don't remember, adhere to the SD 2.0 spec, which supports cards over 2GB. The projected sizes for this current spec goes from 4GB up to 32GB.

Each one of these cards go for $199.99, but come with its own special SDHC USB reader bundled, because your 53-in-1 card reader doesn't support SDHC just yet.

One of the best features of SDHC cards is their high 5MB/s transfer speed. They make Speedy Gonzales look like regular Gonzales.

<![CDATA[Pretec Intros 4GB CF Card with 20MBps Read Speed]]> Pretec announced the 133x, a 4GB Compact Flash (CF) card the company claims can read data at 20MBps and write at 14MBps. Pretec boasts that it's the fastest CF card in the world, and 50% faster than its predecessor, the 80x. The 133x will begin shipping in late March, but no price was announced.

Pricing is crucial, because if Pretec can beat the $280 announced price of the 4GB SanDisk Extreme III CF card (available now) that's capable of similar read and write speeds, it might really have something here.

<![CDATA[Anyone Find a 4GB nano??]]>

Go to any retail store and it's clear that there's a 4 gig nano shortage while there's more than enough 2 gigs to go around. I've been searching locally and have been told by a Circuit City employee that there are manufacturing problems with the 4 gig and a Best Buy employee said that their order for the 4 gigs has been put on hold. Granted, they're far from a reliable source of information, but there definitely haven't been any 4 gigs showing up in stores for a couple weeks now. Any word from Apple on the subject?

Thanks Kyle. So readers, what do you think? I know it's the holidays and all, but has anyone been able to find a 4-gig nano? Let us know.
