At first glance I thought the song was named, " tired of being Sony", and had some deeper being. Either way it's a fitting title for Nokia.

I think the price is too high. Considering Nokia's original target was under $300, this is a big let-down.

If they had plans on competing with the iPhone with an unlocked model in the US, I fear they've failed.

@Aaron Martin-Colby: Nokia's original target was under 300 euros, not dollars. At 279 euros they're well within that price.

This was never intended to be an iphone killer. It was a way for Nokia to deliver a mid-range handset with a touchscreen. If anything, the N97 will be the competition.

And considering that they've already sold over a million units before the NAM version is even available doesn't sound like a failure at all..

As much as I like S60, the interface and phones coming out are getting tired. I hate to admit it but I want either an iPhone or a Blackberry. Seems all the best apps are coming out for either platform, even though I think S60 has better hardware to run on.

@Life Is Eat And Die: Nokia is supposed to launch their app store for S60 at MWC so there may be some change there.

@tande04: Did they say anything about what countries? There are several cool apps on my N82 including a music store that are for the European market only.

The European version of this phone has also been available here in the States since late last year. The Nokia flagship stores in NYC and Chi-town have them for $350, a much better price than the gouging that's been happening over at Amazon.

I was expecting the NAM version to be slightly higher in price. All-in-all it's not bad for a mid-range, unlocked touchscreen phone that doesn't require you having a 30 monthly data plan attached to it like a chain around the junkyard dogs neck...

What are the US prospects for the N97 when you get down to it?

With as long as its taken for any mention of the 'Tube' in the states I can't imagine that the N97 is going to roll out in the US first on a major carrier.

I don't understand Nokia "screw the US" approach. I guess I do actually, we're little more then an emerging market in their eyes and they sell more then enough without the major releases here to keep them happy. :(

@tande04: It's not that Nokia does not want to sell more of it's products here. The US doesn't get these phones due to telecommunications company regulations. In Europe or Asia, there is no BS like tying handsets to carriers. I'm pretty sure that you would never have to sign a 2-year contract either.

@tande04: Unfortunately Nokia has a better market overseas which is why we keep getting the short end of the stick. The N97 is slated for a March release in the UK. There's been no word yet on when a NAM version will be available. With any luck perhaps we'll see the North American version by end of 3rd or early 4th quarter.

Does *any* phone/device in the US need 3G?

The United States has poor coverage for 3G, so why really even have 3G?

Especially when companies like AT&T proudly boast their 3G video calling/video share service in non-3G areas, when there's no 3G even remotely close to them.

@Dakota Courtois: I get 3G and 3.5G connectivity just about everywhere with my unlocked N95. Once in a while it kicks down to Edge but even that's been happening less and less lately.

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude disguised as another dude: Come way up to northern New York State then. I'm an hour or so away from the nearest 3G coverage on ANY carrier.

@Dakota Courtois: Well if you are around the Adirondaks, then yes coverage is nil. According to AT&T though they've got coverage as far as Potsdam. Plattsburgh even has a little 3G goodness too..
