The 4.8" flagship 5G ditches the tired interface and buttons of the Gen-5 device for a slick UI and touchscreen-only operation. It's got Wi-Fi, HD video support, web browsing, email, a huge HDD (up to 250GB), and built-in HSPDA 3G connectivity. It's also got dock connectors, GPS, DVR, video/audio recording and more. In short, it's everything that the iPod touch isn't, and I got to touch it.

The interface on the 5G is incredibly smooth, scrolling is similar to the iPod touch, and the included Opera web browser does zoom and looks excellent. The device is intuitive and the touchscreen is responsive and big enough to really enjoy movie watching.

The 5 and 7 are also great devices, featuring 4.8" and 7" displays, respectively. They are 3G capable with a separate dongle, and otherwise feature all the great specs of the 5G. The 5 will be available in 60-, 120-, and 250GB varieties, while the 7 carries either 160GB or 320GB under the hood. The products will retail between $350 and $550 when they arrive in September (5), October (7) and January (5G). It's a good day for the little portable-media underdog. Spec sheet down below. <![CDATA[It's Time V1.0 Brings Leopard Theme, Usable Dock to 5G iPod]]> Apparently, the It's Time hack provides iPod classic users with a proper Leopard theme, complete with a usable dock and other added OS X inspired fun stuff, including a Front Row-esque Now Playing screen and Finder-styled progress bars. We haven't confirmed this one ourselves and the images certainly are rendered, but if you're up to nothing, try this one out and let us know how it goes. [It's Time via iPod Wizard]

<![CDATA[iPod Video 5G Hacked with Bluetooth Module]]> Giz reader Ed Hernández is at it again with his wireless audio iPod modifications. This time he hacked a fifth generation 30GB iPod video to include a Bluetooth module for audio output but, since the 30GB model is so thin, Ed had to do extra hacking. He told us his shopping list and some impressions, after the jump.

To make space for the audio Bluetooth module he had to take out the hard drive to replace it with a Compact Flash. He also changed the front white plastic for an iVue clear panel to let the Bluetooth LED to shine through. "One of these days Apple will finally take the hint..." Ed said to us in an email. Hopefully they will, because doing this looks quite difficult:

It took me about a month of part time research, but If I were to do it again today, just the labor would only take about a couple of hours. Total cost of just the BT mod is only about $50 but if you break it down it would be like this:

$50 BT module
$30 Clear faceplate
$35 Flash adapter
$30-120 Flash card (depends on your budget)

According to Ed, the "sound quality is very good, on par with an external module anyway. I use the Motorola S9 headphones and I am very satisfied. Not audiophile quality mind you, but more than adequate for the gym." [iPod Hackers]

<![CDATA[iPod 5 and 5.5G Get Firmware Upgrade to iPod Classic]]> Unlike with the Zune upgrade, Apple didn't back-port all the new features in the iPod classic to the iPod 5 and 5.5Gs, even though the hardware wasn't all that different. Good news for you, because hackers have figured it out themselves and released an upgrade so you can get in on the new menu action. From what we've heard, the custom firmware is a little quirky and doesn't quite work as well as the real thing (and doesn't have Cover Flow), but developers have been updating this with bug fixes to bring it up to speed—but it's still buyer beware at this point. <![CDATA[Nokia Year 2015 Cellphone Design Contest Winner Video]]>
This concept cellphone was lionized back in June , but now we have a video of it in action.

To recap, Nokia held a contest where designers were to come up with a cellphone that would "hit" the market in 2015, making it a 4G or 5G cellphone. The winning design, by Daniel Meyer of the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, envisions a cellphone that doubles as a mouse (kind of like this) and, as seen in the video, easily transform into a "piece of furniture." It looks just like a docked iPod to me, but I don't have any fancy degrees in design or anything.
