@St3v3: Here's from Sony's website:

"A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch. is required to output 7.1 Ch. audio, supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format, from the HDMI OUT connector. This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel."

From what I understand from that is that it supports TrueHD and has limited support for DTS-HD. Other than that, changing the processor has no effect on the audio codecs the system supports. Any new codec support would come via a firmware update (which I'm pretty sure that a lot of the ones that it supports now weren't originally supported, rather, they were added by firmware updates).

@inertial: No. Smaller chips are more reliable because they heat up less and faster because they have less resistance.

@ceilingFANBOY: Naw, speed/performance is the same, but yes, heat output and power consumption is reduced. It should also enable them to use a smaller motherboard and hopefully a smaller PS3 eventually.

@Nintenboy01: An interesting thought: When most chip companies make a chip smaller and more efficient, they choose to make it faster. This means the chip will run at the same temperature, but faster speed.

Game consoles on the other hand have set clock speeds that don't change (Don't mention the PSP), so chips stay the same speed in addition to becoming more efficient and cooler, as increasing the clock speed would make games perform differently on the new hardware for better or for worse. Strange paradox.

@e-friend is MistakeByMilake on PSN: I think that explains what I had said in a way. I was making more of a sweeping generalization of what happens when you change the size of the chip and not what is going to happen in this case.

PS3 is a total bust until they start coming out with awesome games. My 360 does everything i need for now. also the free online is a joke, id much rather pay a little bit and get no lag as apposed to free and laggy.

If anyone has ideas why i should buy one id like to hear them as i don't want to miss anything worth buying it for.

@Grimm85: The online isn't laggy for PS3. If you are playing a P2P online game, then it will lag if the host has a slow connection, but that's the same for the 360. Other than that, a lot of PS3 games have their own servers, such as Warhawk (that's about the only way that you can have one of those 32 player matches). As for reasons to buy, it all depends on what type of games you like. I like platformers more than all these FPS games which is why I actually do more playing of downloadable games like PixelJunk Monsters and Eden.

Either way, if you like shooters then there is Resistance and Killzone 2 will be out soon. If you like platformers, there is Ratchet & Clank and LBP, if you like racing games, there is Motorstorm (take the 2nd one, not the first one), WipeoutHD, and eventually they will actually release a full version of Gran Turismo, and if you like sports games, MLB The Show is one of the best and most realistic sports games I've played.

@alowishus: I did this, and regret it now. Forza just isn't the same, it's awful, and it ticked me off. The real place the PS3 needs to work on is racing games, and GT will fill this.. but when? My Xbox 360 sleeps under my bed while my PS3 gets used so much it's probably completely filled with dust by now.

@Kev50027: Have you tried WipeoutHD? It's a pretty solid game for a downloadable title. I don't know if you like racing games with weapons, but if you do than WipeoutHD is good.

@zenpoet: I'll honestly say do not buy it just for blu-ray. If you are going to occasionally pick up a game or two for it then go ahead, but there are plenty of capable players out now that are cheaper. The BDP-350 is $298 or sometimes even cheaper now and if you really don't need the internet connections and stuff like that you can get a Magnavox for $198.

@Solday: Maybe not so much for a one time move, but taking it back and forth places is rather inconvenient, especially since the curved top makes it so you can't stack things on it easily.

@ceilingFANBOY: Although the PS3 is incredibly heavy for its size, and rather bulky, I still take it home every weekend I go home from College. It's really not that hard.. it's not much worse than taking a desktop replacement laptop or maybe 2 econ books.

@Kev50027: Personally, I wouldn't want to risk moving it around that often. The constant plugging and unplugging can't be good for it. It certainly isn't as convenient as a PS2, fatty or slim, at taking it somewhere if you aren't driving. Not that I do it anymore, but back in the day when I had friends that lived within walking distance from my house it wouldn't be unusual for me to take my gaming system with me. Wouldn't have been able to do it that well with a PS3, though. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it's not as convenient as other, smaller systems. That, and I don't like taking my system that I paid $500 for too many places. I'll take it to a party with me every once in a while, but that's about it.
