<![CDATA[Treo 700p Unwrapping And Activation]]>

Rob, the bespectacled tech impresario lothario, made a video of him unwrapping, starting up, then activating (and activating, and activating) the Treo 700p. Some discoveries: downloads and uploads are quite speedy, camcorder features are alright, and the size isn't too much different from his old Treo 600, but is much faster. Not an in depth review, but interesting nonetheless.

Thanks Rob!

<![CDATA[Palm Launching Palm-based Treo 700 on Monday]]> Word around the PDA-fire is that Palm is launching a Palm OS version of the Treo 700 on Monday. How do we know this? Some brightwads over at TechWorld posted, then yanked, a story about the smartphone.

The biggest deal is that this thing can act as a wireless modem via Bluetooth or USB. It has a 1.3-megapixel camera, 312-Mhz processor, and 128 MB of memory. Sprint and Verizon should be carrying it this summer. It will definitely be interesting to see how the sales folks differentiate these two phones from each other. "See, this one uses Palm, which is like Apple. And this one uses Windows, so you can play Quake 4."

UPDATE - We got ourselves a pic.

<![CDATA[Sprint Confirms Treo 700p Launch Date - 5/28]]> Well, the May 28th date we last reported on seems to be the firm date for the Treo 700p. Coming from "The Spring Retail Sales Playbook", the calendar date is marked for the launch of the Palm Treo 700, Blackberry 7130i and LG LX550.

If you've gotta have the Palm OS version as opposed to the Windows Mobile version of the 700, start getting your finances in order for this EVDO, 1.3MP smartphone.

<![CDATA[Rumor: Sprint Treo 700p in May or June?]]> Palm Infocenter is running a rumor from one of their readers that details the specs and release date of the Palm OS-based Treo 700p. Saying he was shown an internal Sprint webpage with the information, the reader says to expect the launch of an EVDO-capable Treo 700p in May or June, running Palm OS Garnet 5.4.9. That confirms, if true, what most people have been expecting to hear about the upgrade from the Treo 650 to the 700p: besides the welcome addition of the EVDO modem and a 1.3-megapixel camera, there will be hardly any difference between the two models.

<![CDATA[Sprint Treo EV-DO Rumors: 650 Software Radio Upgrade, Q1 Release?]]> An unidentified source high up at Palm Sprint has disclosed some information about the future of EV-DO, specifically on the Palm Treo. First, EV-DO is a software solution, he's reported to claim—not hardware—so with some clever hacking it is possible for everyone's favorite Treo 650 to do EV-DO. We find that highly spurious.

Secondly, the source claims that by Q4 we'll begin seeing EV-DO run at 1.2 to 4.5Mbit download speeds. Upgrades have been on the carrier's roadmaps from the beginning, so that's certainly possible.

He also claims that by early 2007 will see the release of WiMax, the high-speed flavor of 802.16 that could be used on cellular towers—should the carriers choose to implement WiMax despite the potential for obviating their own cellular networks.

And lastly, the Sprint source would not confirm a release date for the anticipated Treo 700p, but he did say to "wait a little bit" if you are planning a phone upgrade in the future. We expect the next Sprint Treo with EV-DO soon, as well.
