Caller ID For Android Adds Location Detection To Your Incoming Calls
Caller ID from WhitePages is an add-on for the default Android caller ID that enables location detection. The service tells you two bits of info whenever someone (whether they're on your contact list or not) calls: the approximate city the number belongs to and whether or not it's a landline. The app seems to work pretty well for the first (it got my phone's area correct), but wasn't smart enough to know that it wasn't a landline I was calling from. China Goes With Lenovo For Its Own Google Phone
China will be getting its own version of an Android device in the first quarter of 2009, but rather than going with HTC's G1 handset, China Mobile is opting for a Lenovo Mobile version of the Google phone instead. Details on the Lenovo Android are scarce, but considering the G1's already available through less-than-legal channels in the country, it'll be interesting to see how it fares. Though the black market version costs a pretty ridiculous $550 right now, it's possible that unauthorized resellers are keeping the price high until other Android sets hit the streets. Breaking Down the First 24 Hours of the Android Marketplace and the iPhone App Store
The folks at Medialets have put together a number-crunching comparison of the iPhone App Store and the Android Marketplace after the first 24 hours. There is nothing really Earth-shattering in the data, but it does provide some insight into the similarities between iPhone and G1 users. Basically, it illustrates that both parties are interested in the same sorts of apps, given the fact that the distributions are fairly similar. One could draw the conclusion that Android users are more into lifestyle and productivity-based functionality, but without detailed information comparing the number of these apps released by both platforms at launch, this assessment is probably a bit premature. Did the announcement that T-Mobile sold 1.5 million G1 pre-orders sound a little too fantastic to be true? Information Week thought so and talked to the guy behind the astronomical number—a mathematician at The Motley Fool. Android Dream Will Cost $199, Get Low-Price Data Plan and Google Branding
Putting it firmly in a price point to compete with the iPhone, the Android-running HTC Dream will cost $199, according to the Wall Street Journal. The smartphone will also get an “aggressively priced” data plan from T-Mobile and receive some heavy Google branding. HTC Dream Gets Unconfirmed Specs (Decent CPU Power, Meager RAM)
Android Guys has an as-of-yet unconfirmed spec sheet on the HTC Dream (which they say is called the T1 on T-Mobile), supposedly one of the first Android phones to hit the market later this year. The most notable specs are the 528MHz Qualcomm 7201 CPU, which is a fairly decent processor as long as it's powering an OS that's not too bloated, 64MB RAM (kinda dinky), 1GB microSD card, 3.1-megapixel camera with no flash, decent audio and video codec support 3G, Quad-Band GSM, 802.11b/g, a 3.17-inch screen with 480x320 resolution and AIM/MSN/Yahoo/GTalk. This is TuneWiki, the music playback app that shows Karaoke-like lyrics and album art on almost all the music on your phone. It's been officially ported to Android and looks very, very impressive. They've added features like searching YouTube for videos of your tracks, plus searching their database for certain song lyrics if you only remember part of a song. HTC's Android Phones Still On Track For Q4 2008
HTC's CFO reiterated that their Android phones—previously slated to be released Q4 of this year—will be released Q4 of this year. Android handsets are still planning to be shipped to "ODM clients" in the fourth quarter, meaning that you might not actually see them until late, late 2008 or early 2009. Why? Because those ODM clients, like T-Mobile or various other companies who are using HTC to design the base phone but customize it even more, need time to work their own add-ons in. Dell, Google May Make Joint Android/Google Phone Announcement at 3GSM
"Senior industry sources" are making the bold claim that Dell and Google are going to announce a joint effort to make THE GOOGLE PHONE at the 3GSM conference in February. That sounds unlikely to us, and with Dell's history of putting their name on other people's gadgets (the iPod, for example), if anything it's probably just another manufacturer announcing that they'll make an Android phone.
