Actually, a couple of those controllers would be really useful, such as the jet ski handle to hold them in place. Of course, most of them are just pointless - a Wii lightsaber?!
The big joke here is this is the type of control that Nintendo tried to sell us on in the first place for the Wii. When they showed off the controller all anyone could talk about was the possibility of using the Wiimote to play virtual sword fights and other game types that the controller's "waggle" turned out to just not be powerful enough to accomplish. Now a couple years later they are selling an add-on to give you what the thing was supposed to do in the first place. Simply brilliant.
I put motionplus on all four of my wiimotes, and it has improved things for all games, even those that did not get optimized for it. Endless ocean (a great after-work-cooldown game, btw) is much easier to control, for example. I have yet to try it with Tigerwoods or sports resort, but I'm already pleased with how it's taken out the shakiness in the other games.
If you think the calibration gets off in archery, you're just plain doing it wrong, sorry.
Every time you press and hold A to raise your bow, the MotionPlus re-calibrates. Wherever you were holding it when you pressed A becomes the zero point. As the instructions tell you, you're supposed to hold it straight in front of you when you press A, which prevents any sort of drift from occurring.
@NanSwan: Exactly, you have to recalibrate it, plus you have to go through the trouble of always holding it straight in front of you. A good motion system shouldn't need that--it should always know where you are in space.
@KTK1990: It's a lot more "accurate", in that you won't be bowling 200+ games unless you're actually good at bowling and can control spin. So it's harder.
@Jason Chen: I can tell you for a fact that it does steady-out the shake and jiggle that used to appear in my non-WiiMPlus titles. Is that from "seeing"? Not sure, but I'm getting a better experience overall with WiiMPlus attached, regardless of game.
I've had a heck of a time getting my wiimote to accurately paste it's pointer on my TV screen. My sensor bar is centered right at the top of my TV. I stand about 6 feet directly in front. But it always seems to be about 6 inches too low (or high?).
I will probably wait until there's a game out there that I absolutely HAVE to play with motionplus enabled. By that time, I'm sure you'll be able to find them at less than MSRP. Then again, what's 20 bucks these days?
For the love of God, would you PLEASE fix your comment system! If you get more than 2 comments, it slows Safari to a CRAWL and it keeps popping up that "slow javascript" message. Dudes, did you not test this?
@DeusExMach is a star-bellied sneetch.: Same issue keeps happening both in Firefox and IE on my laptop. Granted, it's not an amazing state of the art laptop or anything by any stretch of means, but it's not that old. It still has 1 gig of RAM + a core 2 duo processor. However this site goes to a crawl for each article as both browsers struggle to load the comments. I'm finding it quite frustrating actually.
@Asherek: Yeah, I had an issue with IE7 on my work laptop. Upgrading to IE8 bricks one of our supplier sites, so we haven't upgraded to 8, yet. I couldn't access the comments for a solid week and a half. Eventually I downloaded FF3.5 and that did it for me.
Form the Iawata asks i think a lot of it comes from the sensors used. I would think that sonys way might have these problems too.
The fact that the kind of sensors used get out of wack with use is not just a nintendo thing.
I think its all a matter of how programmers use the data. I do not think you can actually review the wii motion plus hardware itself since every game will use the data differently and unless you have a nintendo wii dev kit you cant reallytell how it functions.
@GodfreyOriole: Well, we review it as far as what software is out there, since that's the best it can get. If the sensors were actually great, but every game out there used it in a dumb way, then the overall picture would be that the technology was not very good. We'll reevaluate in 6-12 months when more titles are out and see how it's progressed.
Great review Jason! I was about to go out and make an impulse buy but upon reading your review I'm not so sure it's that much better than the regular controls. Maybe the newer software will address some of the issues and I'll buy it then. It would be cool if there was a follow up review when more games are out or something.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: Yeah we're planning on doing followups when more titles are out. Wii Sports Resort is pretty fun, don't get me wrong, and it's worth $45 to try it out.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: Yeah, I was standing in the video game aisle at walmart, debating whether or not to pick up WSR and an extra motion plus. I ultimately decided against spending $70 to play a fencing game for an hour.

about how much better is the bowling game?
I was thinking of buying Wii Sports Resort and a MotionPlus just for the bowling game.
I have a wii and 3 controllers and mainly use it for family Wii Fit and a few bowling games.
Is it really worth it to buy Resort and Motion+?
Also, probably in a few months. 3rd party companies will have their own version of motion+, possibly with better sensors in them.

Thanks :-).
I will look around for it and try and find a good deal and get it.

Make sure to buy the bundle to start out.

can you turn it off or do you have to remove it to play regular wii games or does it even effect regular play?
