cs4 is the kind of edition that comes out once you've run out of new great things to add. I have CS2, and works fine for me. CS3, good too, from what I've heard. So if you can't improve it, you do dumb things for the sake of newness and marketing to make more money!

@qrius: i agree, though the only reason im using cs4 is because of the integration of the adjustment layers options into the workspace tabs.

on my desktop this is a pointless update. but on my tablet pc with its 1280 screen, keeping all the adjustment popups nicely tucked away is a great feature

I've been using CS4 for a couple of weeks and am similarly impressed. I also use Premiere CS4 and although it has some minor problems, it is quite awesome, too.

PS doesn't respect a lot of Mac things because Adobe and Apple have been spatting for years. I still remember when Adobe dragged its heels for 9 months in developing the OSX version of the suite.

My gf at the time was aggravated because her company wouldn't upgrade (which was needed) until Adobe shipped OSX compatible versions of PS and Illustrator.

@jdbaile3: It seems like a lot because the regular old consumer can buy this too and we're used to programs in the $50 - $250 range. Licensing fees for bigger companies that would use this is on par with, for example, software for Ad firms that put together media buys like TapScan and Maximi$er. That runs in the tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousand of dollars per year depending on the # of licenses needed. Don't even get me started on financial software for guys on Wallstreet. My roommate in currency trading says the software on his laptop is worth two orders of magnitude greater than the laptop itself.

@N@tedog: I guess it seems like a lot to me because my job is a software programmer. Software is an interesting thing to price, as the only "materials" are people's time to produce it, then packaging and discs.

Just makes me wonder about how marketing and sales for companies like Adobe determine the price of software.

Then again, I guess I make just under 60k a year right out of college, so software costs a lot to pay my salary!

I would love to see "the very real cost of piracy".

I'd likely be the last to condone it, what with me working in software and all, but the industry as a whole suffers from a serious lack of perspective on this issue.

How many non-professionals would spend that kind of money on this software?

@Loonie: Not many do. Which is part of the reason for the $2,500 price tag. Adobe needs to recoup losses to piracy and from companies that do multiple installs with only one license.

Further, let's not forget the cost to businesses that legitimately purchase licenses.

@OMG! Ponies!: You seem to be confused about the difference between "costs" and "profits." "Piracy" of intellectual propety does remove or destroy ANY money or other real assets held by the owner of that property. Common CLAIMS of the "cost of piracy" are based on the truly incomprehensible notion that every stolen copy would've been work x amount of dollars in the owner's pocket if only "piracy" didn't exist. Surely no one here believes that every kid with a bittorrent client is withholding millions of dollars that rightfully belongs to the software/media companies out of malice. If intellectual property theft didn't exist, I seriously doubt very many of the PirateBay users would be shelling out $2500 for this.

A couple, maybe. There may be a few people out there who want to use professional-grade creative software for a non-professional purpose who actually think it's worth over two grand. No company would be so foolish as to steal the tools of their trade.

Media, maybe a bit mroe of an impact. But I can still guarantee that there is not a 1:1 correlation between incidents of media theft and potential sales. People steal software and media because they can and it's free. Not because they HAVE to have it AND have the money for it.

That old fool living by the Dune Sea only ever had the one saber and he was all about "look at how elegant this ancient weapon is" and "I lived in a more civilized time" and "listen to me prattle on about hokey religions".

Not only that, but maybe if he had a trusty blaster at his side, he wouldn't have gotten hisself killed by his former student.

How about a smoke bomb? It creates a distraction and clogs up Vader's air filters.

Or maybe he could have used some Jedi Mind Tricks against Vader. Like "Hey Annie - see that dork over there? That's your son. He's as whiny as you were. And the dame wearing the Cinnabons - that's your daughter. Her English accent is worse than yours. Good job procreating. Damn hippie chick doesn't wear a bra. Mind if I smoke? Awww... too soon?"

Between that and the realization that Grand Moff Tarkin would now refer to him as "Annie" - especially in front of the stormtroopers - I'm fairly certain that would send Vader into a blind rage allowing Ben to take pot shots at him with ease.
