I never understood what good it does on say a Boeing 747, as they peak out at ~600mph. Sure, the amount of machinery would never fit inside of say a supersonic jet, but would this actually be able to respond to a ballistic missile in the event of an actual launch?
depends on the range of the laser. also, icbm's travel at like 4000mph, with an impact velocity even greater than that. so basically, if you want to shoot it with your 747, you better be flying over the city that the missile is gonna hit. i would suppose that this is the idea: if we think someone is gonna nuke us, we launch these jets over all major US cities and strategic assets. wait till the missile gets close enough, and PEW PEW, country saved.
Boeing is the prime contractor for ABL, which will provide speed-of-light capability to destroy all classes of ballistic missiles in their boost phase of flight.

On the other news: US Air Force is developing Orbital Kinetic Bombardment..
