I don't know that the Kindle is a "stopgap" device. A device that has a specific purpose is always going to do the job better than a device that tries to do more. As soon as you start festooning an ebook reader with a keyboard, email and web browser, the ability to play videos, etc you end up with a device that is not good for reading.

I think dedicated ebook readers are here to stay. I think they'll continue to get better with obviously necessary improvements like color screens and the like, and they'll get lighter and more compact, just like the iPod has evolved. And they'll get cheaper, and there will be a few different flavors to suit different needs for school and work and play.

Reading is so essential to so much of what we do in business and recreation, a dedicated device makes a lot of sense. To me the idea that ebook readers will be replaced by laptops is very backwards thinking.

I would disagree that the Kindle does not matter. When you are at the beach or a resort somewhere, you want to be able to read as though you are reading a real book and the Kindle with its size affords this. I have the Kindle app on my iPhone but it is just too small for me to want to read any book on it.

@GadgetMan: I think what he means by the "hardware doesn't matter" is that if they come up with a better way to present eBooks, they can ditch the ePaper thing easily, provided that the network of digital content is intact. Kindle-like devices are still the best solution for now.
