Why not make an e-book reader that has roughly the same physical footprint of a paperback and the same font size but have it open, like a book, to reveal two screens, a.k.a. "pages"? Maybe even make it slightly larger than a book to offer the user options as regards to the font. The sides of the device itself could, with today's technology, be rather thin and you could easily slip this device in your pocket.
Based on what I've seen, you wouldn't want to try to jam the kindle in your pocket and since it has an open face design, it suffers from exposure to the elements as well as things dropping on it, inadvertently scratching it, etc.
@fsusmithc2: That actually sounds kinda cool, but then having this sort of design might be complex enough to drive the price up beyond any possible impulse buy range, like the extra display and all of the extra hardware for the bind. This also runs a greater risk of mechanical failure. Having a single piece design keeps the hardware simple and cheaper, and makes it less prone to wear from moving parts.
Besides, if protecting the screen is an issue, there will be cases with opening flaps for these soon enough, just like the others.
The only way I would ever buy this is if we could get all our text books on it. My business law book is a bitch to carry around. I'd definitely pay full price for the Kindle 2 if that was a possibility.
@William Gu: I wish. Textbooks are a pain in the ass since they're extremely expensive (especially if they greatly exceed your voucher and are on a tight budget), and are hell to resell since newer editions render older ones useless by the time you're finished. Having a textbook file that you can download would be fantastic, but I can't imagine the publishers being willing to sell books at even half the price of their hardcovers/softcovers in Kindle file form. I think the same might apply to law books, but the likes of West et al could possibly start selling e-books, but they may be very expensive.
Let's all be honest here. Many of us read Harry Potter books or other tome-like fantasy/SF books. You're not allowed to bitch about the size and weight if you read SF regularly.
You got it all wrong Ponies. I can't believe you forgot book Potter Book 7, The Deathly Hallows. Hermoine charms her cute little purple purse to carry a library of book, amongst other things.
Sheesh.
But the who "Deathstick" I want the best biggest wand blah blah blah was just to funny...you know, Dumbledore being gay and all.
The way you said it may have not been pretty but it's true. I hate to sound like an Apple fanboy but you would think Amazon could have taken some notes on the iPhone's usability.
I am afraid Jobs and Company are going to rain on the Kindle's parade with a device called the "Apple Hardback."
Looks like a neat device but imagine a touch screen with internet access. :)

That's a fantastic idea. Imagine being able to buy your school books with this. Make electronic notes and highliting with the ability to print.
Hmmm....

If you speak to most avid women readers, sizemodo does matter. :)

Or if you read Vogue.

If the screen is far too small
For the book to you enthrall
And you cannot read with vigor
Wave your wand and just shout "bigger!"

Tell Hermione to come back when she reaches Level 20.
