While impressive from an engineering point of view (and a sheer "how badass can we get?" POV), the fact that they needed to use liquid helium to run the cpu at 7 GHz is more proof that we're heading for a massively multicore future - at least until another set of materials to replace silicon and aluminium gets in widespread use and which can run faster without getting hotter. I think we'll see 80-core x86 chips first, though.
And daqman - I can sympathize! I worked in a plasma physics lab in college, and we used a lot of liquid nitrogen and helium both, and while liquid nitrogen was fun (a colleague froze a slug at one point, and I took a thermos back to a party to pour into a punch-bowl, etc), the liquid helium was tough to work with. Not to mention time-consuming, since filling a dewar meant a *massive* amount of super-cold "fog" coming out of that flexible metal pipe from the big tank, and then air was always freezing onto the rim of the dewar (and I got some pink skin a few times, but never actual frostbite, doh!)
@Software_Goddess: I've been solidly in the AMD camp for many, many years myself. I've never been anti-Intel, but I always appreciated lower-cost alternatives who tried harder to innovate. I even used to build my own systems with Cyrix processors, back in the day. #amd7ghz
As a bicyclist myself I've got to ask: Where the hell is that guy locking up that bike? Baghdad?
Thats a bit overkill if he's just running into the store or stopping for a bite (which is the only time I ever chain up to a street sign or the like). Kinda defeats the purpose of having two spots to chain to when one guy runs two different locks through the whole thing. #gizmodoremainders
@tande04: I run a very tin cable through my front tire for longer events, but that thing is just overkill. Also the bikes are meant to be secured with one on each side, so this setup still works. #gizmodoremainders
@tande04: China. You can still get a bike stolen here in the time it takes to visit an ATM - even with it chained to a pole and a wheel lock. #gizmodoremainders
@Toastie: Yeah it still works, just not as well as it could have.
You can get two bikes on a sign too, one on each side, but then you end up fumbling around the other guy's stuff, getting stuff looped, and maybe tangled. None of its a big deal, it can just get to be a hassle. A hassle that could be avoided had jackass not locked his bike down like fort knox when he's just getting a pack of gum. #gizmodoremainders
Yay for the government. I prefer AMD over Intel because I can get great performance very cheaply, but I concede that Intel trounces AMD's processors. If I could I would build/buy an i7 rig but I don't have that kind of money. All that being said I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro both with Intel processors. #intelantitrust
Great, now chip prices go up again because Intel has to cover the costs of all the lawyers. Thank you government for screwing us over.... #intelantitrust
@szrimaging: And then people buy more AMD, AMD will get more money to research more and we get faster processors without Intels douchebaggery. Yay government! #intelantitrust

@Bluecold: The problem is, people are sheep to the marketing mainstream. As long as Intel is the "brand name" people will still buy them over the "untrustworthy value option". Not to mention, anyone who is a performance freak will work on getting the better chip, so AMD better hurry up and do a leap frog.
I, for one, am going Intel in the next build because AMD can't compete when building a high-end photo/video rig. #intelantitrust
@szrimaging: And what if you can get 2 Opteron's on a server board with loads of RAM for the same price as a single i7 setup? You'll get the Opterons because they combined are faster. #intelantitrust

Many people I know, myself included, have been delaying a hardware purchase until Win7 comes out. I have a feeling sales will be strong all through the holiday season. While most people have cut back on major purchases due to the econ, the need for new computer hardware is there and the WANT factor is pretty high too.
