<![CDATA[Why Amp'd Mobile Filed Chapter 11]]> Specifically why did Amp'd Mobile file for Chapter 11? They owed money to a few people:

Verizon Wireless: $33 million
Motorola: $16 million
Vivendi: $10 million
BestBuy: $8 million
MTV Networks: $1.8 million

When coupled with other debts, the bill runs to about $100 million, which is more than they have in assets. And we're not even bringing up a little something called the gratuity.

Amp'd's full release post jump.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM AMP'D MOBILE

On June 1st, 2007, Amp'd Mobile Inc. filed for protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure the business. As a result of our rapid growth, our back-end infrastructure was unable to keep up with customer demand. We are taking this step as a necessary and responsible action to sustain and strengthen our momentum in the market place.

We expect to continue normal business operations throughout the reorganization process. We are confident that we will emerge from this stronger than ever for the following reasons:

* The strength of Amp'd Mobile's brand and high customer demand for the product.

* During the reorganization process, we are working with one of Amp'd Mobile's largest investors to obtain debtor-in-possession financing. Our investor supports our vision, strategic direction and business plan.

* Amp'd Mobile's senior management team remains largely intact as we continue to focus on improving and scaling our backend infrastructure.

We are committed to assuring Amp'd Mobile services remain uninterrupted and will continue to provide our customers with the best service possible.

<![CDATA[Amp'd Mobile Files For Chapter 11]]> The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that Amp'd Mobile filed for Chapter 11 late Friday night.

I'm not all that surprised, especially given the crazy amounts they've spent on advertising when compared to their relatively low 200,000 subscriber count. Was their mobile multimedia focus ahead of its time, or just not in line with consumer tastes?

<![CDATA[Amp'd Mobile Adds EA Games]]>

Amp'd Mobile, that odd high-speed wireless service aimed at the younger folk, have teamed up with giant video game purveyor Electronic Arts. Looks like you'll soon be able to download 15 games, including Madden NFL 06, Need for Speed Underground 2 and The Sims 2 which could be more than mildly addicting on a cellphone. Amp'd (whose big-time investor just happens to be MTV) also says that it will actually build a dedicated game channel around the EA brand, letting you get video previews, user ratings and other content as well. The only time frame we have on this right now is "early this year" and no word on pricing just yet.

<![CDATA[Amp'd Mobile Pushes One Out]]> 0,1425,i=110165,00.jpgAmp'd Mobile [WARNING: Hella Flash], the only mobile carrier that uses Shakespearean contractions, is aimed at the children. Those crazy kids love their cell phones, you betcha, so Amp'd is going to give them a nice slider Kyocera slider phone called the Jet.

I saw the UI and some of Amp'd's—man, that's an awkward construction... Amp'ded? Amp'deses?—and I can say that it looks pretty nice. They will have downloadable content and a fascinating organization system so you won't have to dig around to get the latest Avril Simpson song. Instead, you can power through, grab it, and then rock out while you snap jelly bracelets and skateboard down at the Peach Pit.

The youth market is clearly underrepresented in this culture and Amp'd is out to change that. I believe the children are our future. Give them phones and let them lead the way. Show them all the downloadable content that they can buy.
