No problem, matt. Shutting down analog service to all of San Diego was the least I could do.
And the rest of you had better pay up. La Jolla didn't believe me when I said I'd shut down their analog broadcasts. Now, Blanche and the rest of the Golden Girls will suffer!
@OMG! Ponies!: I think you are thinking of Florida. La Jolla is over-run in soccer moms sporting size D silicone pads and late sipping doks that shave their legs and try to fit into the tightest pair of spandex.
@mullingitover: At the same time though, why did the government feel the need to interfere and force people to digital in the first place? If digital was really all that great, it wouldn't need a government mandated cutoff of the alternative to become the new standard.
Just playin' devil's advocate here, personally all the tv-watching I do is with DVD's, and not even hi-def (Sony hasn't yet convinced me that Blu-Ray is worth the hassle, if anything, I'm even more wary of it since they bought their 'victory' in the format war), so the switchover has little to no effect on me.
@archercc: "this is just to help his buddy at ATT out since Verizon gets that bandwidth when the swtich happens"
Totally wrong, but thanks for playing. AT&T bought billions of dollars worth of 700 MHz in the same auction Verizon participated in, and also prior to that acquired the 700 MHz assets of a company called Aloha for couple billion. This doesn't help anyone except Sprint/Clearwire.
@Thud: I'm sorry, but aren't there more pressing matters? I mean, FUCK TV. Digital/Analog - stop wasting your fucking time. Let's waste our time on economics instead. Deadlines are deadlines, what is the goddamn point in extending them? The real issue is Keynesian or Austrian. Econ. Bitches. I'm already sick of this administration...
At this point "HOPE" means a lot less than me than having a fucking game plan. Fuck TV.
@PC Tonic: Exactly. Delaying the switch isn't helping the country's economy, it isn't keeping illegal aliens from crossing the border, it isn't winning the war on terrorism, it ain't doin' FUCK! This is what we get for letting all the hippies vote.
@Chiper: This changeover has nothing whatsoever to do with your ability to get HDTV. It is a change from analog to digital, not SD to HD. Just because the transition is made..... doesn't mean that all the stations that are still broadcasting in SD will automatically switch to HD.
Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. I see commercials every day saying that the deadline is February 17. Everybody knows that the deadline is February 17.
Besides, this whole situation is already a clusterfuck; $100 says that the coupon program is out of money because the FCC did an awful job at the beginning explaining who needed a converter and who didn't. Delaying the transition will just make things worse.
I fail to see why anyone posting to this tech blog would give a rats ass about the delay. The truth is that most of us here already have digital solutions and will not notice one iota of difference once the switch is actually made.
Instead of whining about the problem, which really isn't a problem for you at all; how about becoming part of the solution. Go down to your local senior center and volunteer to help some seniors get properly set up.
is TV that vital that they're going to delay the shutdown because god forbid 7 million people have to go without TV until they get a digital converter box?
to those 7 million people: i watch, at most, 10 minutes of TV a week, and i'm quite well off.
@rimplestultskin, macberry fanboy: What does it matter if the transition is delayed? Is delaying the transition going to cause some sort of ripple effect that will end up destroying the world?
First: What makes the government think that waiting a few more months with get 6.5 million people to make the switch? Most people only change out of necessity, and there's no necessity to change while we keep postponing the transition. Make the transition, then the remaining people will make the change.
Second: Are the companies who already purchased the bandwidth slots going to be upset with this? They purchased those slots quite a while ago and are probably just itching to use those slots to their benefit. I would sure be mad if I paid millions and billions of dollars for something and the government kept putting off when I could finally have that thing!
Mark my words - The delay will be delayed again - it won't happen until Feb, 2010!! Why? Because we still have 6.0 million people that haven't switched...
For all you fine people who are so put out by this delay, might I just point out that the coupon program was grossly underfunded? And yes, television is technically a right - the airwaves are owned by the public trust and licensed for use by the various networks. To say that certain people (namely the poor and the elderly) should no longer have access to a very basic utility is pretty goddamn monstrous.
