I "installed" my converter box last night, and it sucks. I missed half of my show because the sound kept cutting off. The image and sound is better but it doesn't matter if you can't see it.
@TheStig'sNJCousin_GitEmSteveDave: dude are you paying royalties on that graphic? If so... you've gotta be paying for some republican kid's evolution-free education!
jk. seriously. don't worry about it, it's all for the lawlz.
@Shamoononon has hebetudinous dog ★★★★★: Please tell me you tried at least once or twice turning the UHF dial to 30 when friends said Nickleodeon was on channel 30 prior to getting cable, and being dissapointed.
How about we divert some of the "State of Emergency" funds for the Inauguration, and put them into the DTV switch program. I mean, in '05, everyone was telling Bush that spending 40 million while there was a war on and after a Tsunami was heartless and just tacky. But 200 million during a recession and financial collapse is OK?
@godwhacker: We saw it yesterday. I'm waiting for the photo where we see Barack's outline in the clouds, with his "kind eyes", and his powerful hands gently placing that plane in the water. He then imbued the plane with his ability to walk on water, and allowed it to float until everyone was rescued. From what I understand, had the people tried to walk to shore, and their faith was strong, they could have.
I agree. My parents are 60 and understand (finally) what is happening. There was confusion of buying a box even though they have fios, but we cleared that up.
@There'sAManOnTheWing!_GitEmSteveDave: I know! I wish I could get it at my house and ditch comcast. I live in a city too and my parents live in a crappy little place.
@wasting_company_time: Yeah, but then you have to deal with them trying to get you back. They get real desperate, like what they did w/me:[consumerist.com]
I think all stations should shut off and then turn on analog broadcasting every 100 milliseconds. Technically, they are still broadcasting on analog, but anyone who is watching the over-the-air NTSC will have a stroke. Perfect solution.
I'll tell you why this is a big deal: Advertising. Advertisers don't want to pay money if they think half the nation won't be able to see their ads. And it always comes down to advertisers.
Why is it such a big deal if people are without TV for a few days while they figure out what's happening? It's not like radio, newspapers, and the internet will also stop functioning on that day.
We (the government) should have kept the switchover date completely secret. We could have named it "National walk outside and meet your neighbors day".
I don't really care how long the DTV transition takes. In my area (Seattle suburb) everything is already broadcast in HD & SD, as well as analog, through expanded basic cable (no box). What gets me angry is the fact that Comcast is issuing "DTA" boxes to it's customers, like myself, so that they can encrypt every channel above 30 in April, 2009. The boxes are free, and they're giving me 3 next month, but that's besides the point. Comcast said that cable customers, like myself, wouldn't need any additional equipment. So instead of using my wonderful built-in tuners that came with my nice expensive flat-panel, I'm going to have to use a crappy bagel sized Comcast box, with a Sesame Street-esque remote control, which limits me to 480p SD. Sure, I could use two serarate tuners, one for HD, one for channels 30+, but what a pain! Comcast, and most other cable companies are only after money. And they're cutting corners everywhere. I'm still amazed that the FCC allowed comcast to encrypt their channels. I guess that this tactic is a final push to get people like myself to rent out their digital HD box for an additional $10 a month. Nickle & diming bastards.
@WinslowBabatunde: Yeah, the screeching halt of both the entertainment and advertising industries is just what we need to boost our flagging economy...

@Donnie Clapp: The liner notes say "chicks for free", so who are you going to trust...the internet, or the man who wrote the lyrics?
To date, I can only think of one song that has undergone a change in lyrics due to popular opinion, and that's ELO's "Don't Get Me Down", where they changed one word to "Bruce" because everyone though that's what they were actually singing.
