I see a few clueless people going on about "idiot users" downloading "random stupid crap", from the comfortable perspective of seeing this unfold after the fact and not actually suffering the blindsight that this "random stupid" application brought onto G1 users. Application approval processes ensure that the application is not going to flood you with malicious crap and is not going to destroy your product.

An approval process-free app market sounds great, in theory. In the real world, applications like this show its ultimate weakness. Downloading applications becomes a craps shoot, and a craps shoot for an application market fucking sucks. Hard.

It kind makes me happy to see someone do something like this. Exploiting and revealing flaws in a system is part of the job of any competent consumer.

@Paul Matula: This is nothing like Black Hat reporting holes in a Linux distro or Mac OS. This should be done on their own test units, not those purchased by others.

People whine about Apple's black box approval system until they see something like this happen.

I remember during the G1 launch, someone asked what if people uploaded malicious apps and the answer was the rating system would weed out any bad/harmful apps.

Looks like it doesn't work after all.

@Reil: Sure, I can try my best to avoid stupid crap, but then, how do I know what's a poor quality/malicious application and what's actually stable and higher quality? An application approval process before distribution is a lot like USDA approval. What if food had no expiration dates on it and it was a total free-for-all of food distribution? How would you know the food was bad until you or someone you know got insanely ill because the foods stocked in the markets were totally deregulated?
