Guy Buys $999 I'm Rich App, Discovers He's Just Dumb

While this image may be doctored, I want to believe it's real. What really wins this for me is the desperate tone in the review from the guy who actually bought the $999 I'm Rich iPhone application, saying the application is a scam: More »

The iPhone 3G Now In Stock At All Apple Retail Stores

If you've been wanting an iPhone 3G but haven't had any lucking finding one in stock, your waiting might be over. According to Apple's iPhone 3G inventory tracking tool every Apple store in the US has the new iPhone in stock as of today. As expected, the stock levels normalized once the initial rush ebbed. Sadly, AT&T stores are still filling back orders, so trying to buy one from the carrier could be hit or miss. But if you want one now, you know where to go. [Computer World via iPhone Buzz]

Apple Can Remotely Disable Apps Installed on Your iPhone

By now, we're well aware that Apple can make apps vanish without a trace (or explanation) from the App Store. But Jonathan Zdziarsi, the author of iPhone Forensics, says that Apple can actually remotely disable apps installed on your iPhone. Apparently, there's a blacklist URL in the iPhone's OS that he says "suggests that the iPhone calls home once in a while to find out what applications it should turn off." More »

Giz Explains: How Broadband Usage Caps Will Kill Internet Video

NBC's scheduled coverage of the 2008 Olympics is absolutely breathtaking in its scope: It's broadcasting over 3,600 hours of the world's greatest athletes performing feats that reveal how shapeless and amoebic the rest of humanity is—that's 1,000 more hours than the last 12 Summer Olympics combined. The internet is a huge component of their nearly omniscient coverage. You can even download and watch full-length events. But NBC has a fat red warning on the page: If you've got metered or capped broadband, you might want to think twice before downloading. It's the first shot by major media in the next great battle for the internet's future. Here's why you—and most media companies—should be worried about the new wave of internet pricing. More »

Study: Average Mac Computer Price More That Twice That of Average PC

Fanboys, get your commenting fingers warmed up. A new study shows that, on average, the cost of a Windows PC is half that of an Apple computer. According to data collected by the NPD group, the average Windows notebook goes for $700, while the average Apple laptop costs above $1,500, dropping a mere $59 in the last two years. And that's nothing compared to desktop computers. More »

Psystar Lawyers Hinting at Antitrust Defense Against Apple

If you thought Mac cloners Psystar were going to go on the Apple chopping block without a whole lot of fuss...think again. The case is about to get a lot more interesting now that their defense team seems prepared to play the antitrust card in court. As Colby Springer, one of the lawyers on Psystar's team noted: More »

When Good Firmware Goes Bad... And Why You Should Wait To Update

"Firmware update" sounds like something you'd want. Something solid, yet fresh and new. But lately deciding to update is getting more complicated. The newest firmware is no longer just a nice downloadable present from a benevolent electronics overlord; on many devices, it has been buggy or downright dangerous to install. Manufacturers like Apple, Nintendo and Sony are increasingly releasing firmware that disables functionality for business reasons—or that just make products worse by being halfbaked. Here is a rundown of firmware updates that weren't exactly beloved by users. More »

Apple Cinema Displays To Get LED Refresh?

Macrumors is reporting that new Cinema Displays are coming from Apple that will bring LED backlights to the whole line, which is in sync with the company's plan to ditch fluorescent backlights entirely. The tipster is seeing Macworld in January as a likely time for them to pop up. They haven't been updated in any large fashion since 2004, so this doesn't seem that out of the question. HDMI please? Logitech's diNovo edge keyboard, originally billed as "the most advanced keyboard in the world" has only been available in Windows versions, but today Logitech are releasing a version for Macs. Calvin and Jobs Kick Steve's Nuts

I don't know if comic strip genius Bill Watterson would like this version of his worldwide-beloved Calvin and Hobbes/Jobs—who morphs from philosophical tiger to killer CEO—but we approve of this wonderful version by MAD's Jacob Lambert (writer) and Gary Hallgren (artist). Actually, it made me laugh and wish for new strips. The drawing may not be as good as the original, but Jobs' physique and attitude feels absolutely spot on. Update: another series after the jump. $999.99 iPhone App "I Am Rich" Probably Only Applies to Developer

You must've seen at least one book titled something like "This book will teach you how to earn $1 million." Now, picture an iPhone application that has just two functions: a red jewel icon that "always reminds you (and others when you show it to them) that you were able to afford this," and, after pressing the "(i)", a secret mantra that "may help to you stay rich, healthy and successful." It costs $999.99. See where I'm going with this? I've got a better mantra that'll help you stay rich and healthy (by avoiding accidental spending-induced heart-attacks.) "Make sure you keep iTunes asking for your permission to buy apps before purchasing, or clicking on this app link may make you very, very sad indeed." Update: Apple have pulled the app from the App store. You can turn on one-click purchasing again. [Product page]

Apple Receives Six New Patents: New MacBook, Dock Designs Coming?

Apple today received not one but six patents for a variety of items, including an iPhone/iPod touch stand, an amplification system, a form of speech synthesis, and something it calls a "computing device" that looks a lot like a MacBook to us. Also, a new earbud/lanyard design, and a new backlighting scheme. Keep in mind, some of these patents might be for things Apple already sells, it's a common practice and is responsible for the "patent pending" phrase on some products. Others, though, like the stand, haven't been seen by eyes outside Apple, and it makes us curious if we ever will. [MacNN]

The Last U.S. State to Get the iPhone

Until now, AT&T has had no service in Vermont. But thanks to some regulatory hullabaloo, AT&T will be getting coverage in the Green Mountain state anywhere Verizon's coverage overlaps with rural provider Unicel, who it's gobbling up (to preserve competition and all that jazz). We're not really sure how the technical details will work (like how AT&T is taking over Verizon service areas, since they use different cell technologies). But the upshot is that Vermonters will be finally be able to legitimately get the iPhone—the last US state to do so. Hell, Canada got it before Vermont did, that has to sting, eh? [WCAX via TUAW]

Apple's MobileMe Launch Problems Might Be Just the Beginning

The MobileMe launch was a massive flustercuck—even Steve said so. Our long national nightmare is over though, right? Well, Om is reporting that their whole net infrastructure is a few years behind where it should be, and if it's as bad as he's heard, "then there is no way Apple can get over its current spate of problems." 1500mAh Solar Powered Charging Case For the iPhone 3G

Yes, yes...we have heard plenty of complaints about iPhone 3G battery life, and there are already several solutions like battery packs and rechargeable hip holsters hitting the market. However, the new case from Mobile Fun has one advantage over all of these other devices—it can be charged by the sun. More »

iPhone 3G Now in Multiple (Unofficial) Colors

If there's a gadget that can use a new coat of paint, Colorware is almost always on the scene first (with pretty good results). But if there's ever been a gadget just begging for color, it's the iPhone 3G and its glossy, plastic back. For $150, Colorware will give you that burst of backside color you've always wanted, and for $20 more, you can customize the button and frame. As for the matte around the screen, that can come in any color, too, as long as it's black. [colorware]
