I'm down with this. Woz probably thought, "Ah, what the hell, I'll bet it'll be fun," and that's the right attitude to take. Hell, Quentin Tarantino did nearly the same thing, for probably the exact same reason, which is cool, too.

I'd be skeptical of that. I think there are a lot of people (like me) who may use the iPod Touch as a dedicated media player, but who use a different phone for dedicated personal/business usage.

As time goes on, it only gets easier to find a public wifi AP too. I guess I'd probably get an iPhone if I worked outside of the city in the middle of nowhere.

Actually you can pay companies to write positive reviews about your products on places like Amazon etc so I'm not surprised at all that this was happening on the App Store too.

I'm convinced that 25%+ of the reviews on Amazon are fake.

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: one note, I notice is that people use the reviews as a "comment board". Often they will rate 0/1, and ask a question, and then follow it up with another 0/1 "reviewed" question. It doesn't seem like the proper forum for that type of interaction. Apple should have a built-in feedback/question in the app store, and also let them know that the review section is only for reviews.

It seems to have tainted many apps. I myself click through, even if an app has a bad rating, and notice, that the negatives, are often as I illustrated below, badly informed customers, that have no idea how an app works.

Perfect example is of an app like Boxee, where people have no clue what Boxee is, they download it thinking it will allow them to do something (who knows what they think), and then they realize that they have to do A, B, and C, and then get pissed, or start asking questions, because "it doesn't work".

    IDIOTS!

Considering I worked for a company that paid companies to do this for their products, I was being very serious. And secondly, I stated an opinion of mine, not some percentage fact.

When I read reviews I make sure to hunt out the really bad ones and read what they have to say.

There's a jewelry company in Montreal that sells a lot of their items in Overstock.com, and one thing they like to do is have a few people log an extra hour or two to write phony positive reviews to boost the image of the things they sell. Of course, these reviews are generally written better and don't seem to have any specific pattern, so are not suspicious at first glance. I imagine a lot of people do these sorts of things and we don't know about it.

@given: Franz Ferdinand were members of the Austrian Pirate Party - close allies of the Pirate Bay Founders. Their legal execution by the judicial wing of the RIAA caused public demonstrations against works for hire. The supression of those riots by Benito Mussolini's secret police (the MPAA) led directly to the illegal rebellion now known as WWI.

In reply to Mark the Spot iPhone App Tells AT&T Where They Suck
I'm actually very impressed with this app. What they DO with the data remains to be seen, but the impression I get from the app is that they are serious about collecting good data. It's well designed with several reporting options, and the ability to pick a location on the map is top notch. I just submitted two reports for areas I know are poor (but overall I'm happy with AT&T coverage in the Sacramento Metro area, and it has recently gotten a LOT better in the SF Bay Area, where I frequent).

On a side note, this is also a handy tool for quickly picking the coordinates or street address from a location on Google Maps.

In a way, this almost seems like a tool for network techs, not the average dumb consumer. It's nice that AT&T is giving its customers the credit to use the tool properly.

@Nathan Obbards: I agree. While I'm not entirely sure if an e-ink screen would quite fit in with what the Courier could do, it probably couldn't hurt. Unless these screens aren't as great at registering multitouch input as other screens. Just have to wait and see I guess.

@OCEntertainment: This isn't e-ink. It's a "transflective" LCD. They call it ePaper which is a general term for all sorts of reflective screens. I agree that e-ink would be too slow for the Courier UI but this screen is just as fast as any other LCD. You need the backlight on for good color but the cool thing is you can turn the backlight off and have a grayscale screen that is readable in any light paper would be. This gives you a display that's easy on the eyes, daylight readable and power conservative.

@FigNinja: I suppose that's a little better. I'm still not sure, though, what benefit it brings to the Courier beyond what a regular screen would. I mean, it's not entirely implausible, but I see low-power, not-backlit screens as being for extended reading periods, whereas the Courier seems to be about active research, brainstorming, and designing. Maybe it could work, maybe not. I just hope that however they implement/pitch this it justifies the new complexity of having a screen with multiple screen modes.

Let's not piss Occam off, after all. ;-)

@OCEntertainment: Well, the last demo I saw of this screen claimed they were getting 20 hours of battery life while using a netbook. That's pretty compelling. If you're mostly reading, you may not need color. It was a quick button press to turn it on when you needed it. The nifty thing is you don't have to use that feature but if you're having a day when you can't plug in or you want to read outside in daylight, you can do it. Since this screen can be manufactured in existing LCD factories, they can offer this feature with hardly any price increase over normal LCDs. There are so many promising screen technologies but they all require new manufacturing methods meaning they will be expensive for quite some time. Look at how overpriced ebook readers still are. That's the e-ink.

In reply to Mark the Spot iPhone App Tells AT&T Where They Suck
I've had a lot of problems with AT&T over the last few months, and one of my biggest frustrations has been that when I call AT&T about it, they act like they've never heard of anyone having a problem before. A couple of times I've berated them into giving me a substantial discount on my bill (as much as a whole month) but generally they have just said "we can give you a pro-rated discount for this service problem" which means they'll refund like $1.50 because that's a day's worth of service or something. And then I get really steamed because of course I don't pay as much as I do to have intermittent service, I pay for constant access.

Now this app provides a way of logging, for legal purposes if necessary, every service problem and for anyone who wants to get a discount off their bill, they should be able to get a days worth of service for every documented problem. And for those looking to leave AT&T early, this app may very well be the ticket, since if they aren't holding up their end of the contract, you aren't obligated to stay with them for 2 years.
