15-Inch MacBook Pro Gets Small Processor Bump

In all of the Apple announcements today, it would be easy to miss that the 15-inch MacBook Pro ($2,500 version) has gotten a processor bump from 2.53GHz to 2.66GHz, along with an upgrade option that now reaches 2.93GHz. That puts its base configuration on equal number crunching footing with the 17-inch MacBook Pro (the only major internal difference now is 4GB vs 8GB of supported RAM). [Apple]

Apple Releases Firmware Fix for MacBook Trackpad Seizures

Hot off of software update is a firmware fix for those glitchy trackpads in the new MacBooks that would completely stop responding after a certain number of clicks. We never had problems with our trackpad, so it's hard to tell if it makes everything better, but the dead plant left outside my window did magically come back to life. Okay, not really, it's still pretty dead. But my trackpad does still work okay. Let us know if it helps you out (or doesn't). MacBook Air Might Go Carbon Fiber to Shed Weight

The MacBook Air weighs a little over three pounds. Airy, but there's lighter. Not surprisingly, Apple wants to weigh that little—under three pounds. The easiest way to cut the fat is to use a material less heavy than aluminum that won't compromise the body's integrity. Enter carbon fiber, which AppleInsider says might replace the Air's lower aluminum case. More »

If you don't mind buying refurbished goods and you also don't mind those goods being last year's model, there are deals to be had in terms of the MacBook Air. Like the 1.6GHz model for $1,349, the 1.8GHz model for $1,499 and the model with the 64GB SSD for $1,799. Not bad prices, although still more than you'd pay for a brand new regular MacBook. Psystar Working on Ugly-But-Cheap MacBook Clone

Calling Psystar's planned Mac notebook ugly is teeeechnically speculation, but I don't see how the Mac-cloner extraordinaire could produce a "very competitively priced" MacBook knockoff that isn't a total brick.
