What is with all the ads with all the freaking altering of Christmas tunes? My ears are bleeding because of them. I don't remember them being nearly as prevalent in the past. I mean, the Best Buy carolers have got to be the worse of them.
Really?
What's the point of having a Macbook if you're gonna make it fugly by stuffing crap like that on it's back?
I mean, that LEGO interacting with Apple's logo was neat. This is just horrible. Maybe a nice fanboy id tag though.
But oh well, I'm a PC user... what do I know about beauty, right?
It was a godsend for subtitled shows, but then I installed Perian and it worked better, in Quicktime, and displayed subs with the formatting they were supposed to have - just like VobSub on PC.
@fuchikoma: Also, if you visit the link, it says that the only crisis is not really a lack of man power to develop it fully, but a lack of man power to keep the UI on the Mac version updated, especially seeing as it's coded in Objective-C.
They're making a complete rewrite of the interface called Lunettes, apparently. Looks very "media-centric" so far... [wiki.github.com]
But I'm more intrigued by this line:
Finally, we have a few issues, since Apple doesn't want us on the Mac platform and is blocking us a lot, and refuses to explain why.
I wonder why Apple would have such an interest in doing that. Maybe it's not Apple, but the new tools of code that's blocking the libraries?
@(Starman) Starman: Lunettes doesn't look too bad... I was surprised how VLC on Mac is mostly like Quicktime on Mac, yet on Windows, it's like it was designed by someone who had never seen video player software before.
I wonder about the blocking comment too... I could see if they got frustrated if their program broke every time a major OS revision dropped. That makes sense too since so many Mac programs require the newest OS version if you're going to get the newer program version... of the same program with the same features.
"Look at Big Three automakers. Same deal. Lazy, fat, slow, stupid, from the top to the bottom — everyone focused on just getting what they can in the short run and who cares what kind of piece of shit product we’re putting out."
Yeah. That's right Mr. Lyons. It had nothing to do with dumping practices by Japanese automakers. Or that Japanese automakers can charge less by using non-union labor which get far worse benefits than American autoworkers. And it has nothing to do with the protectionist tariffs that countries like Japan then erected to prevent importation of American cars.
The last part really rings false. American autoworkers have historically taken great pride in the cars that they made. It was a family business.
Ultimately, brands failed - in no small part due to bad marketing, extending too many models, and still not being diversified. But saying that the men and women on the line didn't care about what they were working is just plain bullshit. And of course, that's only limited to consumer cars. If I ever had need for a pickup truck, I'd buy from the Big Three any day of the week and twice on Tuesday. The only choice would be between a Dodge Ram and a Ford F Series.
Do I like my Honda? Yes. It's a fun little car. Could it be better? Yes. The interior is filled with plastic paneling and the seats are covered in polyester. Will I buy another Honda? Probably not. They run well but the accoutrements are shit. For a nicely appointed interior, the Big Three did know better than the Japanese.
That said, Mr Lyons needs to drop character for this. Does Steve Jobs (or anyone at Apple) really care about AT&T's network? Probably not. It falls under "Not My Problem". Apple makes phones. AT&T sells the network. And while nobody picks AT&T because they want great service, they do pick AT&T because they want an iPhone. Knowing this, it is in AT&T's interest to help promote the iPhone when it promotes itself.
Whether the iPhone is able to deliver on the promise of the ads in spite of network congestion is irrelevant to Apple. They got paid. And AT&T got paid. And will keep getting paid.
But Steve Jobs has no incentive to care. Dan Lyons does.
And as I've said, if Dan Lyons wants to get pissy about AT&T's shoddy network, it would be best for him to do it from a server that doesn't crash.
Anyone have an links on modding a first gen iPod?
I have one with a fried HD. I really loved that iPod, it was faster than the video I got after it, I replaced the battery so it would play for DAYS and it connects via a simple firewire cord. I'd love to be able to use it but everything I've found is for a mini...
Great post, Chris. Nice break from the obsessive gadget lust we're all afflicted with. Unfortunately, out of my entire gadget arsenal, the only older model I have is a Macbook Pro - the one right before the unibody model. Still, I'm hoping this thing lasts another 3 or 4 years or more.

The 10 year old Sony Vaio does not get as much play as it use to, but our 20" Apple cinema screen and G4 Quicksilver is still going strong.
We did find the new imation 64GB SSD did make a huge difference in speed to revive our "new-ish" 15" MBP.
