    What do you suppose the heating / cooling bill is for a store that is a giant glass cube? Are there tree-huggers out there that boycott Apple products based purely on these temples? Still, it is pretty, in that Apple sort of way, though Steve is going to need to upgrade the street signal and crosswalk sign in front since it brings down the overall high-tech aura of the store. #applestore

    At some point, I'd say that this place is going to be hell during winter to clean the windows.

    But good for apple to have their hall of consumerism and Steve Jobs worshipping up, it's very good looking.

    Same design cues you find in any cathedral. A huge space and super high ceilings to emphasize a connection with the heavens, although taken another level with glass ceiling. #applestore

    I really like what their doing with the service areas in new stores. Designating a whole floor, out of view of the rest of the store, is an excellent idea, especially for the genius bar.

    It's been a major flaw in their retail stores design. You have all these amazing computers and gadgets to look at and play with, and then at the back of the store, you have people getting them fixed. Not the vibe I'm sure there going for. #applestore

    I always find it amazing how Apple seems to do soo little with such a vast amount of space. Such hardcore minimalists.

    Just so we're clear:

    We're talking about a store, right? It doesn't do anything like launch into space or anything like that... it just is a place that has stuff to buy in meatspace that you can just as easily purchase on the internet.

    I just want to make sure. Because the fawning makes it seem like it is more than just a retail establishment.

    @RADEN: I dunno. Spending time in a nicely designed store can add to the experience. When I was a kid there was a high-end audio store in town...Threshold, B&O, McIntosh, B&W, etc. Entering the shop was like entering a temple: dark, subdued lighting, with ceiling spots picking out the expensive glowing components. It was a bit like being in an Egyptian museum with rare finds on display. 'Course, I couldn't afford any of it then, but that didn't stop me from visiting whenever I could. Sometimes the environment alone makes it worthwhile. #applestore

    I see a tall proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace, a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity, and if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here. That's how I saw it and see it still.

    @OMG! Ponies!: It might look like a store, but it's actually a pretty good (or maybe best) illustration of how art, music, architecture, pop-culture, tech, and economics converge in a single place and at a single point in time. people get excited about shit like that.

    Purdy building, too bad it will probably be even more unpleasant to hang around in than the 14th St. one. Also, that cavernous glassy greenhouse is kinda.....hmmmmm.

    Makes ya wanna just release lots of pigeons so they can rocket at the walls and ceiling.

    @N@tedog: It's sorta why I love the design of this particular store.

    In New York everyone tries to figure out how much retail space they can pack into a set amount of space. Apple on the other hand has done the exact opposite. Create a huge open area to display their products.

    And I think Matt hit it on the head. It's like a shrine. #applestore

    The window washers in the first photo are just the morning shift. Fully-staffed, the store has a crew of about ten people who consistently wipe down the windows every half hour. No breaks are possible. #applestore

    haha I haven't been there in a while, but it's essentially like any other mall except instead of having multiple crossways inside the mall it is one continuous round structure that comes full-circle when you walk through it. #applestore
