I know your DVR is chock full of 24 and here is the perfect solution to prevent a recording tragedy. The DVR Xpander is really a glorified external hard drive. It can plug into any DVR that has an eSATA port such as the Series 3 TiVo or Scientific Atlanta 8300 (commonly used by Cox and Time Warner). The 250GB model can tack on an extra 140 hours of recording or 30 hours of HD recording and has a $129 price tag. The 500GB model can add 280 hours of recording or 60 hours of HD recording for $199.

<![CDATA[ Apricorn Aegis Portable USB and Firewire Drives ]]>

These slim Apricorn Aegis 1.8-inch drives are both USB and Firewire compatible, making them suitable for Macs and PCs. They've got a shock mounting system and only weigh 3.5 ounces, so taking it on the road with for added laptop storage isn't out of the question—it's totally in the question.

For Mac users, there's also ShirtPocket's SuperDuper! backup software (that I recently ponied up for!) and Apricorn's encryption software.

Prices start at $159 for the 30GB version up to $239 for the 60GB version. Add $10 to both for firewire compatibility.

<![CDATA[ Apricorn Releases 8GB MicroKey ]]> acorn_microkey.jpgApricorn has released a MicroKey USB 2.0 drive with even more capacity, this one holding 8GB. It stores all that data in a relatively small form factor of 3.4" x 2" x 0.5". Yes, there is a hard disk inside as opposed to more-durable flash memory, but Apricorn says it has built a tank around that disk, surrounding it with a hardened aluminum alloy casing that you can drop or sit on without worrying about your data going south.

The MicroKey has a swiveling USB plug that lets you fit it into tight spot, and if that doesn't work Apricorn includes an extension cord to fit the drive into even more-crowded USB port locations. It's $199, available now.
