Hopefully he won't copyright this and oblige people to charge Monster grade prices on it.
I mean, it's interesting and all, but truth is, it'd do almost nothing for me. For my living room alone I have 3 power strips to attend all my plugging needs...
Would be nice for my kitchen though... the only problem is that I'd need a hole in the wall deep enough to fit the entire contraption.
Cute concept, won't physically work or be practical though. It can't even support one wall wart thanks to the fact that the plug's are recessed. #artlebedev
Those sockets have two round holes. Given that they're also a recessed circle, that means they're Type C plugs. In other words, they're supposed to be recessed. All plugs meant to work in type C sockets have an extruded circle meant to fit in that kind of socket, wall warts included.
Beyond that, there's nothing inherently bad about his design. Whether or not it can support the weight of a bunch of wall warts might be a concern, but a sliding mechanism isn't in itself a bad idea.
This isn't just a concept. This is a schematic that can be made into a functional prototype. Art.Lebdev Studio does its research. #artlebedev
I would love to see this thing come to the US, but have 1 problem with it.
I would need the plugs flat with the corner, not in a little. Also, a big plus would be the ability to rotate the plugs 90 degrees. I currently use 2 powerstrips sometimes for external hard drives, because some hard drive plugs are quite big, and take up 3 sockets (when their next to eachother, sideways) #artlebedev
As a former electrician, I can bring a salient fact: this would require a non-standard electrical box. It is too deep of a device, and would require probably even deeper than the "extended boxes" in order to accommodate the device plus tucked-back wiring. Obviously, if whatever box it takes to fit this and the wiring cant fit within a 2x4 stud wall, it's dead on arrival.
Sorry to bring some practicality to an art house piece. #artlebedev
@dtemp: Great comment/point, though drafts from the first designers of a 100% OLED keyboard are worthy of a bit more than "art house" status. #artlebedev
@dtemp: It needn't actually fit in the standard wall box. The outlet module could just attach to a j-box with a standard fitting with the necessary 3 wires extending into the j-box, correct? #artlebedev
Really? Never seen a round screen before? ... they're rectangles now because they're, you know, way more efficient at providing information for a given amount of surface area? Tell ya what, put some electrical tape on the corners of your GPS, and lemmie know how it goes.
@nbolmer: "way more efficient at providing information for a given amount of surface area." How? I'm not saying you're incorrect, just that to a lay person like me, what you are saying doesn't make any sense. And doesn't it matter what information you are trying to provide? I bet a round screen would be more efficient for examining basketballs.
Plus, in the TV above, you wouldn't be using the same amount of surface area, you would be creating more. So, sure, the picture would be better.
@92BuickLeSabre: You bet!
Basically, a GPS is a device which displays straight lines (streets) and needs room for headings (mph, next turn, miles to destination, etc...), which really fit much better at the bottom or top of a flat edge. You could distort the picture into some sort of fisheye bulbous view to get the same information onto a circle, but that's stupid.
A spherical operating system is possible, but it doesn't really make sense for the data. Any line (street) that isn't a diameter (a chord) would be cut off by the edge of the screen, whereas if it were a rectangle, you'd see more of it (and perhaps your next turn as well. So given two screens of the same surface area, the rectangle is vastly more appropriate for displaying streets and headings.
dangit. stupid i live in Minnesota, which, along with ONLY california, bans the use of windshield mounted GPS/ anything... so this would be essentially useless
@rt100 Penn State: I need to do a bit more digging, but I read recently some changes that would allow suction-cup mounts on the "lowest part of the windshield".
At any rate, it's only a secondary offense, so just don't get pulled over and you'll be fine.
What I need is a keyboard that can change the keyboard layout, for different scripts, so changing the keys A-Z, 0.9 and some special char keys. The other keys don't interest me.
So for me, this keyboard is actually 0.0% the keyboard the Optimus is!
I'm dissapointed after reading OLED and seeing this, I normally love OCZ and think this is alright but for $135 I'd expect a few more Display keys. It really does plae in comparison to the Optimus Maximus though, that thing costs more than my estimated computer costs.
Didn't know it had 9 screens, that's pretty damn good for the price. I love this edit button!
@VenomIreland: Ok I've encountered a bug in the comments, in my comment above the paragraph seperaters have vanished and in this comment the image has vanished.

And here I thought the whole point was to not do something like this... #artlebedev

It's not bad, but since we're dreaming, I'd rather have a GPS fully integrated in my windshield with Augmented Reality and stuff...

I find it to be amusing, but it's going to collect a lot of crud inside over time if it's not kept clean.
