Both all-in-one PCs have 23-inch (1080p) multi-touch displays, and Windows 7. But the Z5610's 2.6GHz Pentium E5300 processor won't match the Gateway's Core 2 Quad chip.

This initial $900 Z5610 also lacks the built-in Blu-ray drive or TV tuner we saw in our April preview. If you're after an all-in-one that doubles as a TV, you might be better off looking at HP's TouchSmart 600 or Sony's Vaio L. The $1400 Gateway ZX6800 has a TV tuner, but not Blu-ray.

In terms of looks, the Z5610 holds its own. An ambient lighting strip between the display and sound bar illuminates the keyboard in the dark, and the PC's chrome legs create room to stow away the keyboard and tilt the display 10-20 degrees.

The rest of the specs are pretty basic, though: 4GB DDR3-800 RAM (expandable to 8GB), 320GB hard disk, 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 graphics, SuperMulti optical drive, 6 USB slots, and one eSATA port. You also get 802.11n and Gigabit networking, plus a bundled wireless keyboard and mouse.

Underpowered, yes. But not bad for the price. The Aspire Z5610 arrives sometime before Christmas for $800.

<![CDATA[Acer's Aspire 5738PG 3D Laptop To Launch October 22, Come With Tacky Glasses]]> The Aspire 5738PG uses combination of software, hardware, coated glass, and ugly polarized glasses to give you awesome 3D games, porn that pops right out, and a rather sharp display. And while there's no party, it's launching alongside Windows 7.

According to PC Pro, the Aspire 5738PG's display is bright, sharp, vivid, and with only "some very slight horizontal lines." That sound decent for a 3D laptop, but we'll see once it hits shelves on October 22, as we expected. No word on pricing yet, nor whether more fashionable 3d glasses will be available. [PC Pro]

<![CDATA[The Acer Aspire AS5739G Is a Powerful Blu-ray Laptop For $750]]> Today, Acer announced their updated line of Aspire laptops. But the most interesting has to be the Aspire AS5739G, a no-compromises performance machine with a tempting price of $750.

The system features a 15.6-inch LED LCD (1366x768), 2.1Ghz Core2 Duo processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a GeForce GT130 graphics card packing an extra 1GB of memory. (That card can't run Crysis in high settings, but it can run something lighter weight like Left4Dead, according to Notebookcheck.)

There's also an 8X Blu-ray drive, 250GB hard drive, Dolby 5.1 output, fingerprint recognition and multitouch support. Oh, and it's not even ugly (though it's quite likely heavy as all hell). The Aspire AS5739G is available now.

Acer® Aspire AS5739G, Mobile Multimedia Powerhouse

Taking mainstream entertainment performance another step up, the Aspire AS5739G offers even more power and extras. It's fueled by the power of Intel Core 2 Duo processing for experiencing the ultimate in digital media.

Increasing dynamic visual quality, a 15.6-inch HD CineCrystal display delivers lifelike images in a high 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. Dedicated NVIDIA GeForce® GT130M graphics provide crystal-clear images with brilliant color, making games and digital media appear incredibly crisp and realistic.

The system also comes outfitted with a Dolby Home Theater surround sound system, two built-in stereo speakers, an Acer Tuba CineBass booster and 5.1-channel output. Combined these high-fidelity features liberate the senses with vibrant audio that brings movies and music to life.

Security features include an Acer PowerSmart Key that backs up data without a hassle by duplicating files to another location with just a push of a button. An Acer Bio-Protection fingerprint reader for securing and privatizing personal information is also incorporated.

<![CDATA[Acer's 8-Hour Aspire Timeline Drops to $599, Available Now]]> Acer has finally made an honest product of its Aspire Timeline, so to speak, and Intel's brand-new ULV processors, designed for precisely these kinds of laptops, make a surprise appearance, pulling the base price down to $599, from $699.

The rest of the info is largely unchanged from our first look at this early entrant into the recently burgeoning field of semi-thin, semi-light laptops: the 8-hour battery life claim still holds, LED backlighting keeps power usage down and brightness up on the 1366 x 768, 16:9 screens, and all models boast HDMI output. Displays sizes run from 13.3-inches to 15.6, with the smallest being the priciest, at $899.

It remains to be seen how these new processors—especially the lower-end SU2700—perform under the weight of Vista (Home Premium is default on all models) and if the impressive battery claims hold up in real world testing. But dollar for dollar, these guys definitely hold their own, at least on paper. Full specs below. [Acer]

<![CDATA[Acer Aspire Z5600 Multi-touch All-in-One Mimics TV Perfectly With 1080p, Blu-ray and Built-In Tuner]]> Acer's Aspire Z5600 multi-touch all-in-one does the best job yet of looking like more like a TV than a computer, which is kind of a good thing. Oh yes, it's built for Windows 7—the future.

It's a 24-incher with a 1080p resolution (the only real size for all-in-ones anymore), with a built-in TV tuner and Blu-ray recorder. Beside the Windows 7 ready multitouchness, not a whole lot of specs yet (like what specific processor and graphics), just that it'll hold up to 2TB of storage. It's nice looking though! And, uh, Windows 7 Windows 7 Windows 7 Windows 7.

<![CDATA[Acer Aspire Timelines Get 8-Hour Battery Life for $699, Look Vaguely Familiar]]> The Aspire Timeline notebooks looks sorta familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Hmm. Anyway, they squeeze out 8-10 hours of battery life and start at just $699.

It pulls out the battery life by relying on standard tricks of the trade: Intel ultra-low voltage processors, LED-backlit screens and dual graphics cards (integrated for low-power, discrete for when you're plugged in). Supposedly you get 8 with a regular hard drive, 10 with an SSD (only up to 64GB, bleh). The charger itself detects when the battery is full to cut the power consumption down. Still kinda thick, a little over an inch for all sizes—13.3, 14 and 15.6 inches—but not bad on weight (3.5-5.3 pounds). The screen is a little disappointing, at least on the 15-incher, since they all rock 1366x768 resolutions. However, they do have WiMax.

The main thing really though is the pricepoint for the solid feature and design set, $699 to $899.

<![CDATA[A Quick Look at the 10-Inch Aspire One 103]]> A 10-inch version of the popular Acer Aspire One netbook is on the way, as proven in this first set of real-live photographs.

Aside from the 1-inch screen size bump (at 1024 × 600 resolution), the system is pretty much the same as old Aspire Ones—1.6GHz Atom (model unspecified), 160GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, optional 3G, 3 USB ports, multitouch trackpad, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, SDHC...you know the drill.

One change noted by jkkmobile, however, was that a series of bottom panels should make changing out the RAM, hard drive, etc, a lot easier than earlier units. Given that most netbook owners that I know are cheap DIY bastards (including myself), that's a welcoming alteration on Acer's part. [Antharius via jkkmobile]

<![CDATA[Radioshack Officially Selling 3G Aspire One for $1540]]> That Radioshack ad featuring the $99 3G-equipped Acer Aspire One? That was real. And so was AT&T's wishfully priced mandatory 2-year data plan.

The 3G Aspire One goes on sale December 14th, and it looks to be a Radioshack exclusive for the time being. Packed with the standard 8.9" screen, 1GB of RAM, and 160GB of storage, this Atom-powered 3G laptop looks attractive at $99...until you realize that eligible AT&T plans start at $60/month.

Over the course of two years with service, this system will cost the user a total of $1,540. Internet access or not, I draw the line at my underpowered laptop purchases when they hit the triple digits.

First Wireless 4G WiMAX-Enabled Notebooks for the U.S. Market

Aspire 4930-6862 and Aspire 6930-6771 unveiled at

first U.S. WiMAX network launch in Baltimore

SAN JOSE, Calif. and BALTIMORE, October 8, 2008 – Acer America, part of the world’s third largest PC company (source: Gartner data, 2Q 2008), today unveiled its first WiMAX-enabled notebooks – Aspire 4930-6862 and Aspire 6930-6771 – in support of the nation’s first U.S. WiMAX wireless broadband network launched by XOHM in Baltimore. Demonstrating the company’s focus on delivering innovative technology solutions, the Aspire 4930-6862 and Aspire 6930-6771 are WiMAX-enabled Intel® Centrino 2-based notebooks with the first-ever combined WiMAX/Wi-Fi module, previously codenamed “Echo Peak,” part of the Intel WiMAX/Wi-Fi Link 5050 Series.

WiMAX is a flexible wireless broadband technology that has the ability to deliver rich data experiences for mobile users. With the potential to help bridge the digital divide, WiMAX has the capacity to unwire entire cities, including the most remote and poor communities across the globe. In the U.S., WiMAX offers a third broadband alternative to DSL or cable in the home, with the addition of broadband data and a voice network, which users can utilize on-the-go. WiMAX promises to be the highest performing mobile network in the United States with average downlink speeds of 2-4 Mbps and uplink rate of 1-2 Mbps.

"With the launch of WiMAX in the United States, Acer is building on its commitment to deliver first-to-market cutting-edge PC technology for mobile customers," said Sumit Agnihotry, director of notebook product management for Acer America. "By leveraging Intel Centrino 2 mobile technology and the XOHM wireless network capabilities, users will have the availability for anytime, anywhere wireless connectivity. The Acer Aspire notebooks provide users with perfect combination of mobile and multimedia functionality."

WiMAX subscribers in the Baltimore area can now enjoy free-range wireless connectivity utilizing the Aspire 4930-6862 and Aspire 6930-6771 notebook PCs, with new markets to follow in the coming months. The Aspire 4930-6862 is designed for users seeking portability and power in an eye-catching notebook PC. The 14-inch widescreen multimedia notebook offers portability, style and performance for demanding applications.

The Aspire 6930-6771 is a 16-inch widescreen dream multimedia machine for digital media with exceptional performance. The Aspire 6930-6771 brings a true cinematic experience to movies and gaming, with a 16:9 screen ratio. It also delivers amazing performance for demanding applications with Intel Centrino 2 and Core 2 Duo processor technology, 3GB of memory and a fast 320GB hard drive.

“Intel is pleased to see WiMAX-enabled notebooks available today from Acer that leverage the accessibility of this powerful 4G wireless network,” said Julie Coppernoll, director of marketing for WiMAX at Intel Corporation. “By offering these systems with the Intel WiMAX/Wi-Fi Link 505 Series module, residents of Baltimore have the ability to share and download videos and photos, as well as access social media networks seamlessly anywhere they go in the coverage area.”

<![CDATA[Acer Aspire X1200 Series Mini-PCs Stuff HDMI Jack, 9 USB Ports and More in a Tiny Space]]> If you gotta go the desktop route, Acer's got three mini-PCs packed heavy with ports that don't take up a ton of space. Measuring 10.6" x 4" x 14.4", about the same as a hardcover book, the X1200s have an HDMI port—like Dell's leaked mini, aka the green PC, but unlike the smaller Asus Eee Box, which only has DVI—plus two PCIes, nine(!!) USBs, FireWire, front and back audio jacks, a DVD SuperMulti drive and a 14-in-1 card reader. Under the hood, it comes standard with 4GB RAM, the better to power the AMD dual-core processor with Nvidia GeForce 8200 integrated graphics to run Vista (now with SP1!). The PCs are out now for $450 to $700, a config which includes a 500GB drive and 22" LCD monitor. Check out the press release after the jump. [Acer]

NEW ACER® ASPIRE X1200 DESKTOP IS A SMALL YET MIGHTY PACKAGE

No-compromise solution boasts desktop power and value in a compact, expandable and environmentally-friendly design

SAN JOSE, CALIF., July 8, 2008 - Acer America, the third largest vendor in the PC market,(1) today announced the Acer® Aspire X1200, a truly dynamic and sleek entertainment center with prices beginning at just $450.

Offering powerful desktop components and expansion capabilities in a small box, the Acer® Aspire X1200 desktop enables users to enjoy high-definition movies, games and theater-like sound while maximizing space in the home. Featuring AMD dual-core processors, NVIDIA® GeForce® 8200 on-board graphics and PCI Express® 2.0, it's ideal for entertainment enthusiasts and space-conscious consumers desiring phenomenal performance in an environmentally-friendly design.

"Our innovative, low energy consumption desktop is a no-compromise solution providing desktop power, performance and value in a compact form factor," said Stephanie Hatchel, Senior Manager, Retail Desktop Product Planning for Acer America. "Aspire X1200 was designed to be an appealing, easy to use media hub for making the most of entertainment. From broadcasting MP3s in crystal clear acoustics to showcasing HD movies, this sleek system is a multimedia powerhouse and available at a price today's budget-minded consumers will appreciate."

Expandable and Elegant Space-Saving Design

Measuring just 10.6-inches (H) x 4.0-inches (W) x 14.4-inches (L), the stylish, compact chassis maximizes desktop real estate. Its high gloss coating and recessed venting sport an elegant look and feel. Translucent plastic knobs on the speakers are attractive and make it simple to adjust volume. Peripherals including the keyboard and mouse showcase subtle color differences that enhance the overall design appeal.

Providing room for expansion, the system offers two PCI Express slots (X1 and X16). For easy access and reach, five USB 2.0 ports, a multi-in-1 card reader, IEEE 1394 port and audio jacks are conveniently located on the front of the PC. Four additional USB 2.0 ports are positioned on the back for connecting to a wide array of peripherals and digital devices.

Dynamic Digital Media Powerhouse

Unlike similar small form factor PCs that leverage mobile components with higher costs and lower performance, the Aspire X1200 offers a choice of models that scale up to an AMD Athlon™ X2 5000 processor and up to 4GB DDR2 memory for taking on advanced multitasking. The AMD processors support downloadable AMD Live! applications for optimal recording, transferring, sharing and organizing of photos, videos, music and media. The energy-efficient designs employing the AMD Athlon™ X2 Dual Core 4850e processor, consume less power, resulting in less wasted energy, lower operational cost as well as cooler and quieter operation.

Boasting the NVIDIA® GeForce® 8200 Chipset with PureVideo HD Technology, the Aspire X1200 supports the hottest games with Microsoft® DirectX 10 for realistic, life-like images. The system also promises high-definition movie picture quality with supported formats including H.264, VC1 and MPEG2. Fully integrated high-definition audio with 7.1-channel audio support provides dynamic sound for games, music and movies. In conjunction with an HD display, the Acer Aspire X1200 delivers a superb home theater experience.

HDMI makes it easy to hook the PC to a big screen TV and gives users a full range of support for any high-definition format via a single cable. A high-performance 14-in-1 digital media card reader makes it easy to transfer video, music and movies from a host of digital devices. The mini-desktop also come with a large SuperMulti Double-layer drive, which provides enough room to record significant data, hours of DVD-quality video and thousands of songs.

Front- and rear-access audio jacks speed up connection of headphones, microphones and other audio peripherals. PCI Express 2.0 optimizes computer components, such as high-end discrete graphics cards and network cards for the fastest performance available.

<![CDATA[Acer's "Blue" Ace: Aspire Gemstone Blue Notebook]]> Today in New York, Acer's big surprise is the Aspire "Gemstone Blue" notebook, equipped with a Blu-ray drive, true high-def screen, and CineReal sound, a second generation of Dolby Surround. Sexy, and yes, blue, and it doesn't appear to suffer from port envy like some other notebooks, though it is slender. In size it's somewhere between HP's dv series and Dell's XPS M series. That's not just a size comparison, but a qualitative judgment call: this thing looks unambitiously nestled between the two other PC giants' designs. With such mystery and fanfare, we were hoping for a tad more of an exciting, iconoclastic design. It is, however, a decent product, so have a look. UPDATE: Weights and model numbers below.

Acer_Blue_6.jpgIt's got a cool touchdial on the left for some nice multimedia controls; it's called CineDash, and it's got volume, mute, hold, media transport and menu navi.

The largest of the two models, the 8920, has a 1920x1080 18.4" screen, and a 90% (ATSC?) color gamut. The smaller, the 6920, is 16" with same resolution and 60% of the color gamut. As you can guess from those screen resolutions, both can support full Blu-ray playback. (Another blue reference.) They're saying 3 hours playback on the 18.4", and 2.5 hours of movie playback on the 16" one. There will be an "SD" version with 720p playback of either DVD or Blu-ray.

They're shipping in a month. The starting price point is $1,700, with a typical config around $1,900.

UPDATE: The weights are a bit troubling for anyone interested in mobility: Over 9 lbs for the 18.4 incher, and nearly 8 lbs for the 16 incher.
