    @JCWhitless: Well I'm kinda guilty actually :( I do own an ACER laptop, and it has worked the balls since day one, with it's massive 18.2" display. Still this particular one inspires a big fucking "Meh". Nothing really special about it...meh...!

    @JCWhitless: Eh, I do a fair amount of laptop repair and actually really like Acer's notebook design. They tend to be cheap looking because of the finishes on them, but the actual construction is usually pretty solid.

    Couldn't pay me to take anything HP/Compaq builds, though.

    @Aetius: Terrible engineering. HP/Compaq manage to consistently come up with the most overcomplicated, flimsily engineered notebooks I've seen.

    This has been the case for years, but the DV series was probably the absolute worst. DV2000s and 6000s suffered from major motherboard issues. The DV9000s had one of the worst hinge designs I've ever seen. The hinges would break, which would in turn break all the plastic around it and suddenly the owner's looking at a $300-400 repair. The list just goes on.

    The thing rocks, and with two the odds are I'll keep one on the road for a good long time.

    As far as ease of install goes - stay away from the HP mini 1000. Go for the MSI u120 or Dell Mini 9. On the Dell, and I can't stress this enough, the HD needs to be bigger than 8GB!

    @Digital9: U120 RAM cannot be upgraded past the built-in 1GB. Get the U123 or U100 Plus instead.

    That HP Mini listed on Best Buy is the 8.9" version with the bezel around the screen. The 10.2" version is much nicer looking as it has the edge-to-edge "glass" though that also makes it a little too glossy.

    That's what I have, and I have to say that I am perfectly content running Windows 7 on it. I'm not a serious mac-head though.

    I'm pretty sure that the Dell Mini 9 and the Vostro A90 are the same exact netbook. The Vostro is still being sold through Dell's small business site.

    @imTheKing: As has been said, I own a white Macbook (Granted it doesn't get used), it's not about Apple hate it's the fact that your comments are so dripping with unneeded fanboy-ism it doesn't add to the conversation.     @vladdybear: I'm not so sure how well that analogy fits, since Honda does build their own engines.


    Just the same, Asus could write drivers so that their notebooks are OS X compatible, and allow consumers to bridge the gap.


    Anyway, either OS being better is a subjective matter, and as far as I can see Windows 7 is getting a lot of positive reception.

    @AppleAppleApple: Apparently HP didn't, at least from two years to six months ago (not sure if it still applies). Good Lord, that quality control was horrendous. Failing nVidia mobile chips didn't help much.
