Ehh... I'm reserving judgment for the final product, but so far, the movie doesn't look half bad. May be yet another remake that ends up the "Passable" column... not offending or horrible in any way, but not amazing, either. (Kinda like Speed Racer...)
As an anime outsider, can I ask what the appeal of anime/manga is? I'm not trying to be condescending, I'd just like to know why some people find it so appealing?
@admoseremic: I always have enjoyed Manga for the artistic vision that the artists put into there work (see: Hellsing) and I always like the different types of ways that the authors tell the stories. Basically it is different then the run of the mill A to B to C Marvel/DC comics that are churned out in America.
@admoseremic: At it's base level it serves strictly as entertainment. I grew up on Americanized versions of anime (Speed Racer, Battle of The Planets, Star Blazers, ect.). Even edited and translated they were still fun to watch....
Then I watched some of the Wandering Kid series. That's definitely some messed up sh*t right there.
Apparently the bottom line is that with anime there are no limits, which can be both good and bad at the same time. If you haven't watch any anime yet I'd suggest getting your feet wet with Akira and then move on from there. SciFi runs anime on Monday nights so that's also a good way to check out anime safely before broadening your horizons.
@OGHowie: No sarcasm here, bro. If you didn't like Speed Racer, I feel sorry for you. It was joyous and beautiful. Most people who didn't like it, at least those that I've run across, are prematurely crotchety old farts.

@Jeff Edsell: These are the components I truly hate about the movie. For sake of purism, they kept them in there, but if they weren't in there, I would've managed to enjoy it a bit more. But the racing scenes themselves are certainly an acquired taste.
