Other than being from the same period of time, I have a hard time seeing how Sputnik is supposed to relate to googies.

fallout before everything turned brown and radioactive?

A fallout prequel.. before the bomb would be this, and wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.

    Obsolete futurism FTW!

Look, it's a future where you could still get into fistfights and smoke, what's not to like?

I don't want to spoil anything, but we, in Belgium, have that organisation we all *love* called SABAM (like ARS in the USA). They're part of "the copyright-boys". They ask money for posting a picture of the atomium on a website. It's absurd, I know, but they ask about €100 to € 150 a picture. So you might have to place some copyright-logos over the balls ;-).

    @korneel:

True that, but because it's the 50th anniversary of Expo '58, the rights-holders allow this year *only* for pictures to be taken.

So, Gizmodo's in the clear :)

Steampunk and cyber punk make sense as terms because both are sort of dirty and makeshift worlds where a safety pin might just come in handy to hold things together. But atompunk, no way. 50's scifi is clean and sparkly. It shines like a donna reed episode. Its not dirty and oily like the other two. I always used "Atomic Age" to refer to this time period. I will never say Atom Punk.

@Mark 2000: Hmmm...interesting point. I'd have to agree with you on this. There's nothing particularly 'punk' about it other than it's sub-culture.

I always understood my fandom of that period to be Retro-futurism. :P

ah but you have to admit, if gritty oiliness is the missing factor, that the Fallout series of video games is, in fact, Atompunk.

@spider2544: Here is Webster's definition, I hope it helps.

    1-archaic : prostitute

2-[probably partly from punk] : nonsense , foolishness

3-a: a young inexperienced person : beginner , novice ; especially : a young man b: a usually petty gangster, hoodlum, or ruffian cslang : a young man used as a homosexual partner especially in a prison

4-a: punk rock b: a punk rock musician c: one who affects punk styles

@reddingofish: So basically Steampunk means "nonsensical faux-steam stuff made by young, inexperienced homosexuals"?

Good, I won't have to change my understanding of that word at all, then.

So, what happens in 5 years when actual punk-music becomes a new cultural trend for people to write/paint/dress/design things about? Would people with said fetish be punkpunks?

No, the instant it becomes a mainstream fad, it's _NOT_ punk anymore. It becomes poser-punk.
