aha!
"Seven-segment LED displays were in widespread use in the 1970s and 1980s, but increasing use of liquid crystal displays, with their lower power consumption and greater display flexibility, has reduced the popularity of numeric and alphanumeric LED displays."
so in all likelihood, this IS a LCD

Here's a wiki link for alphanumeric LED displays [en.wikipedia.org]

That is actually an LED display. Each segment of the numbers are lit by an LED. They are called 7 segment LED displays. An LCD display would be a piece of glass or plastic with black digits backlit in some way.

hmmm im not convinced - are they using light pipes to illuminate the segments? LEDs are pretty diffuse... im confused...

as further evidence, the specs for the counter they specify are:
- Power supply : 12VDC. -
consumption : 76mA max.
- Count maximum : 0-9,999
- Can set the circuit for count up or count down.
- Can set the preset digit for setting reset digit and restart counting automatically.
- Can add the other board for adding digits.
- PCB dimensions : 2.70 x 3.14 inches.
notice the 12 volt supply - LEDs use 5V while many common (think alarm clock) LCDs use 12v - no point in having to step that down on the PCB, so im still leaning towards LCD.

Or, alternatively, the increased strain could have simply caused the gears to strip and melt.
Lots of bad things can happen to electronics when you run too much current through them. On the other hand, while they do run they tend to be at least three times as awesome.

Or after six seconds, at which point you'd be out of ammo.
