About time we had something like this. I'm a huge car audio buff and I've been lamenting the lack of car audio tech stuff around here. They don't seem to have any over at Jalopnik either.
Might want to get your facts straight though.
First, the ZX500 was only rated for 600w bridged. Granted, you would have had the sub wired to 3 ohms (since that is a Dual-6 ohm sub), which is below the rated impedance of the amp, so you were probably putting out more than rated power, but unless they clamped it, there would be no way for you to know that.
Second, your specs on the ZX450 are off too. Most component sets are set up to present a final load of 4 ohms. If you were running all 4 channels, you'd be looking at 75w per channel, 300 total. If you had the amp bridged to two channels, you'd be looking at 250w per channel, 500 total.
Oh, and 8 gauge wire isn't thick. In all reality, it's not even adequate for that setup. You'd need at least 4 gauge for that to run reliably, and you really should have had 0 gauge in just to be safe.
@IITravel: I assumed that he meant the 8 gauge was for the amps. The only time you use that large of wire for speakers is for higher-powered subwoofers. There's no way you'd use that for components or coaxes. Hell, I don't even know how you would unless you soldered the wire directly to the leads.
@Hintzyboy: zx500 was running in mono, dude. 3ohms. You got that right.
The 8gauge, I can't remember. It was like 10 years ago. 8gauge was going to the doors, a set to the midbass, a set to the cross that was doing the mids/highs.
Glad to hear you here! It's been so long, but I like talking about this shit.
if posting shitty thoughts is good enough to make it into the comments section.
honestly, you don't have to visit the site. it's his site, he can say whatever the hell he wants. furthermore, it's about music technology and its personalized (one of my favorite parts of gizmodo).
Nice read. Here's a suggestion: you guys could address the surprise I felt when I recently realized music on my Sony Ericsson cell phone sounded better than it did on my iPod (using same headphones, same song, same file bit rate). I only needed a little research to find a new non-Apple mp3 player that sounds better than both my iPod and my cell phone and has reignited my joy for listening to music through headphones. I'd love to see a battlemodo on the best sounding mp3 players out there.
@KingsleyDawlers: That's fascinating. Since most of the decoding chips out there are super commoditized, and everybody generally uses the same set of suppliers, it's interesting to hear that you heard such a quality difference using the same phones, etc. Well worth investigating—not this week, alas, but I'll definitely add it to our list.
@Wilson Rothman: I notice a minor (but noticeable) difference on some songs when listening on my 5G iPod vs. my Touch Pro (in the TP's favor actually), but I've got to assume that some advances in sound quality were made in the 3-4 years that elapsed between the two devices being released.
I also notice a definite difference between ~128k-256k mp3s and real CDs on my car audio setup (obviously in the CD's favor), but when I am listening to music through headphones from either my iPod or my phone I must admit I really don't care that much about the quality, just the fact that I have the tunes to listen to is good enough, and I never really crank my headphones anyway. But on my car setup the difference can be pretty noticeable when it is cranked (depending on the song).
Not that I expect that anyone really cares but here is my car setup:
-Premiere DEH-P8MP CD/mp3/iPod @45x4 (i think)
-Alpine Type R 4-1/2" 2-ways up front
-Alpine Type R 6" 3-ways in the back
-Kicker 10" Solo (one of the original models, it was my room-mate's and he used it for about a year when it was new then totaled his car and put his pair back in the boxes for like 5 years before giving me one for like $50)
-Custom made wood vainer box, made for the specific volume requirements of a solo; "hand-crafted" and wired by a tech at the Martin-Logan production/finishing facility (happens to be in my town).
-I just bought some "Cartech" cheapo 1000watt amp to replace my old Rockford amp that was getting flaky, I really don't have the money anymore to be spending on this stuff, but I figured hey, if I could get a 1000watt amp for under $150 that was recommended to me by a guy at an audio shop, and it came with a 1yr warranty, he said I could bring it back to that shop and they would replace it if it went DOA or flaked out; that it was probably worth it, and it does sound WAAAAAY better than the Roc-Fos shit-block it replaced...
@JazlynTuditanus: See here young'un, I myself ain't no fan'o'that there rippety-rap neither, but if ya'had a few more winters under'yo belt you might remember a time when pop music wasn't utter shit, and we were all still comin'ta'terms with this whole spoken-word-o'er-bass thing.
Nao, my memory doesn't quite serve so well any'm're but if'n I recollect cr'etcly there was a time where that ther Big Poppa feller could could spin'ya a rhyme quite well, it seems ta'me that most ever'body of a certian age twas diggen on them rhymes quite well (myself a som'time participn't alike).
Aw, now I gone an forgot whur I wus goin'wit'dat...
Why the hell would you praise this, Giz? I mean seriously, I didn't say anything yesterday when you really did take April Fools too far (and not the humorous kind of taking a joke too far, where it's even funnier because some people think you've taken it too far--I mean I was behind the jokes for a while, and then I realized I actually wanted some tech news and you guys just wouldn't stop) but to continue into the 2nd is just tasteless on all fronts.
Why the hell is this a) cool and b) impressive? You know why nobody else has implemented anything like this? Because it's the stupidest fucking thing I've ever seen, that's why. And that's why Ford is developing it--because they can't guide their heads towards their asses' exits, and have no idea what a smart move in cars is anymore.
First of all, the hardware and interface both look like absolute shit. I'd rather carve a frame out of my Benz's dash and solder an Apple II in there than have this sub windows CE garbage in my car.
Second, who the fuck needs to web-browse from their car's dashboard?? When the hell would you even use it? During a blackout when your cell phone is dead is my only idea. The sick part is is that the browser is actually the most rational feature.
I swear to god if there is one person on this planet that would ever make use of the spreadsheet program, they should off themselves the second they read this.
Yeah, sorry I'm late honey--I had to find my car's hard drive amongst its other 68000 shattered pieces because I was editing this really important PPT I have to present tomorrow on the drive home.
Son of a bitch. Son of a bitch this is so infuriating. You wonder why Ford can't pay it's bills?? Because they're funding R&D for projects like this!! God damn it I swear I wish I could clone myself and run every goddamn business in this country. The Dow would be at 20,000.
As a personal injury lawyer, let me just say that you do not want more computers in your car.
The great thing about car cases is that it's basically a fight over who has the more likable lawyer because at the end of the day, it's one person's word against another.
Computers are really good at recording data. Put in enough data and your statement that you had the green light gets exposed real quick. Some data already gets recorded but most lawyers don't want to deal with the headaches of getting it. And don't think that the plaintiff's bar wants this either. Their clients lie about their driving just like defendants do.
Also, while "velocitator" and "deceleratrix" are not ACTUALLY the technical terms for the gas and brake pedals, if you can bullshit with a straight face, you can convince a 50+ year-old man with an advanced degree and years of experience that they are.
Ford is introducing their new, "Distraction" line of vehicles.
"Ever feel like there's just not enough to do while driving? Ever get bored on those long trips with the family you never wanted? Well, now is your chance to avoid any and all conversation with them while also ignoring the road more-so than ever before! With the new in-board dash web browser, DVD player, and XBOX 360 no longer do you need to focus on the road. No longer will your eyes strain on the boring American highway system. No longer will you be forced to slow down while investigating other accidents or people getting tickets. None of these factors will ever bother you with the addition of EyeView glasses! With tiny video screens in the lenses you won't even need to look down and strain your neck to look at your dash! In fact, the drivers chair doesn't even sit up and is permanently in the reclined position to maximise comfort!
i am really gonna miss the day when we no longer hear the chorus of mean dual V8 exhaust growling at a red light. i rev mine every once in a while just because i know one day it will be gone.
